| Show FIFTY YEARS WEDDED Mr and Mrs Geo A Hickss Golden Wedding WERE MARRIED IN UTAH Anniversary Occurs at Their Home in Spanish Fork Of One Hundred and Fifty Guests Present Were Ten Who Witnessed tho Marriage in Palmyra TRIBUNE SPECIAL Spanish Fork March 5A golden wed cling was celebrated hero last night The happy couple who received the congratulations congratu-lations of more than 1W oldtlmo friends and neighbors besides some valuable presents was George A Hicks and his wife Elizabeth The following ten persons were present last night and also at the wedding and dance fifty years ago Mr and Mm Mrs Brent Young Mrs Peter Boyack Anna Hughes Mrs Ira Tiffany Mrs Luc Lu-c l Snell Mrs Emma Reese Mr James W Thomas J P Holt and William Uanks Following Is hut programme hart evening even-ing which was interspersed with dancing Prayer Bishop Larsen Remarks by Master ot Ceremonies Tohn Moo Original poem Mrs Hannah Babcock Recitation The Parsons Fee Miss Matido Hicks Greetings to his guests George A Hicks Remarks Andrew Nullson Song Mrs Ellzalh Evans Recitation The Bloom la on the Alder I Al-der and the Tassel Is on the Corn Usa Delia Ellison Elson Refreshments wero nerved to the guests and all went merry as C marriage bell Mr IIIclcs In an old subscriber and at ono line correspondent of The Tribune He was one of the Liberals In polities he Is I a staunch Republican For the major ma-jor part of his life ho was a staunch Mormon Mor-mon but he has been out of the church for the past sixteen years Following Is au Interesting sketch of the longtime married couple George A Hicks was born In the province pro-vince of Ontario Canada January It 18Tu His parents wore Irish Protestants mom bars of the Methodist church Much against tho wishes of his mothers people they cast their lot with the Mormons In Slnguacooslt Ontario In JS37 Leaving Canada they came to Nauvoo Ill in November No-vember 38IQ Hero Mr Hicks saw the first prophet and revclator of the Mormon church Joseph Smith The family remained re-mained In Nauvoo until the general expulsion i ex-pulsion which took placo In 1646 They I removed to Council Bluffs la Here they remained until 3852 Again they took up tho Journey westward Traveling with ox teams they came to Utah reaching Salt Lake City October 3 1852 They wero in the fourteenth company of immigrants with Capt Walker as leader In November Novem-ber they came to Utah county settling a few miles west of Spanish Fork at Palmyra Pal-myra Hero George A now a young man went to school and also as a young man naturally would awooing go Hero he met his future wife In tho person of Miss Elizabeth Jolly While he was born In the North site first saw tho light In the sunny South Tennessee was the home of her parents and In Wcely county May G t 1837 Elizabeth Eliza-beth Jolly was born Her parents also embraced the Mormon faith and came to Nauvoo In 1840 one year after this Hicks family They too gathered to Zion arriving ar-riving In Salt Lake City September 15 IH 2 They were in the seventh company of Mormon emigrants and Elizabeths father H B M Jolly was the captain They too settled at Palmyra The two young lives which wore so woduly sep muted by birth which had crossed at Nau voo and met again at Palmyra were on March H 1853 joined In onu by Justice of the Pence Silas Hlllmau who pronounced thor man and wife And what God Joined together man has not put asunder Eight children have como to brighten and bless their home six boys and two girls Of these two boys have passed on before 1 the remaining children havo homes of their own Mr and Mrs Hicks arc the proud grandparents of thirtyeight living grandchildren while seventeen have entered the great beyond They have made their home in Spanish Fork for many years and have won tho respect and good wishes of all who wish they their may marriage have muny more anniversaries of |
