Show BEET SUGAR INDUSTRY Michigan Representatives Will Fight Cuban Treaty Unless It Is Amended Washington Jan 10For three Gays representatives of the beet sugar industry In-dustry of Michigan have been In conference con-ference In this city not only amon themselves and other beet sugar producers pro-ducers from other States but also with the Michigan delegation In Congress Senator Burrows who last spring opposed op-posed the Cuban legislation then pending pend-ing has been prominent In the conferences confer-ences Today Senator Burrows hart along a-long Interview with President Roosevelt Roose-velt during which It Is understood he indicated to him that the Cuban reciprocity reci-procity treaty now pending In the Senate Sen-ate was not satisfactory to the beet sugar Interests ot his Stale and that it was likely to encounter serious opposition oppo-sition unless it could be so amended as to provide that the concessions made to Quba aa to tarlll rates should remain re-main in force for live years After mature ma-ture consideration of the treaty the Michigan sugar producers had concluded conclu-ded that the treaty was open to objection objec-tion in that it did not Insure stability of tariff rates for any clearly specified period What the producers chiefly desire de-sire is stability of Iates which would enable them to cut additional capital In their Industry < and develop it further fur-ther with some assurance of success The strong intimation Is that unless an amendment can be made to the pending treaty fixing the rates between this country and Cuba for five years the Michigan Congressional delegation will feel constrained to oppose ratification ratifi-cation of the treaty In this opposition opposi-tion it Is said the Michigan Congressmen Congress-men will be joined by others representing represent-ing sugar producing States So far us is known the President has not indicated what his attitude might be in regard to the proposition to amend the pending treaty |
