Show moUonTEUNDElt THUNDER MOUNTAIN Fred Mitchell of Salt Lako Beaches the Dewey Camp A letter bearing date March 15th was received from Fred Mitchell announcing an-nouncing his arrival at Thunder mountain moun-tain Mr Mitchell left Salt Lake February Feb-ruary 23rd The letter states that he arrived in camp with 100 pounds of provisions which is worth there 1 a pound This was carrier on his back he says a distance of forty miles by taking llfty pounds for a distance at a time and then doubling back The snow he says is five feet deep and the trip was consequently a tiresome one The Dewey mill he says has shutdown shut-down on account of the men all quitting work in order to locate claims for themselves The formation he describes de-scribes as being porphyry and volcanic ash carrying firce ore that yields from 70 to 1SO a ton In gold In many Instances A peculiar feature is streaks of charcoal that also run well In gold Placer mining he describes I as paying well The placer mining ground outside of the three mountains of the district Is described as extensive and the yield being from 350 to 25 to the ton He states that he was the first spring arrival over the Salmon trail |
