Show NO INQUIRY ORDERED Sensational Reports Hinting at Fraud Are Unfounded Washington Aug 23m regard to the sensational newspaper reports hinting at gross Irregularities and frauds In the unloading of United States transports at ports In the Phil ippines and declaring that a search hog Investigation is about to bemade to discover the guilty parties Freder ick llittman auditor of the War Department De-partment stated most persistently today to-day that no special Investigation Is be lag conducted by l him In that matter The charges were to the effect that the tonnage oC the small Philippines cascoes which heretofore have been used tn take transport stores ashore was In a number of cases falselv set down at a u higher figure Payment for the cascoes was made in proportion to their tonnagv and the reports allege that the Government had suffered losses by the false statements Mr Klttnmn states that In the ordinary ordi-nary course of routine I business the War Department has supplied him with a schedule showing the registered tonnage of all of the little Filipino crafts This will be used In the exam ination I or quartermasters accounts and every delinquency thus can bo brought to light The auditor makes the point however that the matter Is not to be made the subject of a special spe-cial investigation but is simply to be dealt with as a routine affair |
