Show JT HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT I The primaries held by the Republicans Republi-cans In this city on the evening of Monday Mon-day October 12th were by all odds the most largely attended of any primaries ever held in Salt Lake Thin in itself proves triumphantly that they were the best and most representative Besides that there was no claim made at anytime any-time of anything unfair In these prl marlcH prior to the holding of the city Republican convention The ward conventions wore held two evenings later still no charges that there WILS anything wrong with the primaries Nor was there then or since then any sort of an imputation against either the delegates or the absolute fairness of the nominations for Councilmen Council-men at these conventions So far as was serene there was no hint of any discontent The sume feeling feel-ing continued in the city convention The proceedings went on with perfect amity the usual committees were appointed ap-pointed and the usual recess was taken ta-ken 1 In the afternoon it developed that there was delay in the report oC the committee on credentials on account of some contests There is nothing In the least unusual about this on the contrary seldom is a convention held In which therefore not contesting claims to scats But TlTerc did not appear to be any contest that was out of the ordinary or-dinary nil difference were reconciled and the committee made a unanimous report When thru report came before the convention was the time for anyone any-one knowing of anything wrong with any of the delegatIons or with any of the persons holding proxies their names were all publicly read to say BO and object to their being on the voting vot-ing I roll Was there any such objection Not a hint of it not a whisper The report was adopted with a unanimity and enthusiasm that spoke well for the satisfaction of all with the delegate roll as thus made up by the convention itself it-self and for the harmonious outcome of its deliberations And who were those delegates They were men selected as stated at the largest primaries ever held In this city They were men more largely composed of propertyowners householders than ever were in any similar convention here They were the substantial citizens citi-zens the thrifty workmen of this city To attack them is to attack the whole body of the people And it was not until after a candidate who had confidently counted on the Mayoralty nomination had been defeated I defeat-ed that there was the faintest intimation intima-tion that any one in any way questioned ques-tioned the absolute fairness of anything from the primary to tho nomination The motive of that questioning was too plain to allow the belated charge to have thc slightest influence upon any candid mind It was merely the outcry of failure and a reckless Imputation of political crime to salve an unexpcclrJ wound And that continues to be the position The County Attorney has officially called upon those wlro make these charges to come forward and make them definite so that prosecution can be had of any one reasonably supposed to bo guilty The reply to that t in the organ of discontent is that It Is hard to establish such a cave If it had suld it IK Impossible It would have had the matter Just right There is some dust raised by the soreheads and that is all It amounts to for in fact It was as fair a convention as ever was held and the convention was composed of men whose average was very high In ciyic standing stand-ing and virtue It Is time that all candid men dismissed from their minds all tho disreputable suggestions made by malice anti chagrin |
