Show t TREASURE IN BOOKS I Wonderful Works on Exhibition Exhibi-tion in This City PERRYS GREAT COLLECTI0N Volumes That Are St Rare as I to Be Priceless Books Over 2000 Years Old and Others for Which 3OOO Has Seen Often Refused I A very rave and priceless array of books was that which greeted the eyes I of the visitors who attended Preston A Perrys exhibition on Friday The 1 shelves on nil sides oC a large sample room at the Wilson hotel were filled with an array of the bookmakers art of all ages and lovers of books lingered lin-gered for hours handling the curious and volumes ns though they were sacred sa-cred and Indeed many of them almost are Think of handling a Sutra 2300 I 1 years old written on palm leaves and I i bound In teaqucwood and another of the same style 1500 years old I Then a Hebrew rollbook containIng the book of Esther ages old and a Persian phrasebook a curious contrivance of i Ivory and soldi In the collection are also several wonderful missals ol the fourteenth century 1 showing patient years of toll on the part of the monies who wrote I them and those who did the mlnatures and illuminated the letters On some I pages every line begins with an Illuminated Illum-inated letter each a work of art while I i every page shows one or more of these f letters or early examples of printing Mr i Perry has such treasures as Nicholas Jensens masterpiece Plinys Natural History wonderfully well preserved an early Psalter printed by Peter Schoeffer a tonlnlaw and partner of John Faust the associate and patron and later the oppressor of Gutenburg Another wonderful copy In the collection collec-tion Is Slmoncttls Life of Francis I i Sporza beautifully Illuminated Two of the most highly valued books In the collection are a splendidly preserved pre-served copy of the Koberger Bible I I printed in 1483 and a matchless copy I of the Nuremberg Chronicle printed in 1193 This latter volume contains all I tho plates a number of which are i missing from most of the volumes now I In existence A perfect copy of the I famous Ship of Fools printed In lISS and seldom seen in America Is also Included In-cluded In this valuable collection Among his collection of books none cc valued by M fr Perry more than his Elzevirs and Aldines while among the tare first editions are thoso L of l > n Jonson Faerie Queen Orlando Furloso ilcllglo Medici Paradise Lost Raleighs Hemalns Senecas Morals Utopia etc Truly a wonderful one is Mr Per rys collection of the books of today including many first editions with all the added embellishment of Illustration I Illustra-tion illumination and the binders art Some of the most remarkable examples exam-ples i I of the modern bookmakers art are done by women and among the especially beautiful volumes done by womjn in this collection maybe mentioned men-tioned thofut of MIss Mary Prat Miss Erne Hart Miss Foote and Miss Bulk ley Perhaps the most remarkable books In the whole collection of the modern art are two done by a young man named Adams of New York The binding Is of levant morocco fully 500 pieces being Inlaid to carry out the beautiful design These Brownings Men and Women are valued at 1000 I While collecting rare books Mr Perry Per-ry has not failed to appreciate the value of autograph letters and among many are seen letters from such famous fa-mous authors as Scott Thackeray Dickens William Morris Browning Lowell Longfellow WhitHer Hawthorne Haw-thorne Holmes Charles Kingsley and others Mr Perrys collection Is i In short the finest ever brought to this city probably proba-bly the finest private collection ever t brought to the West and tho privilege of seeing them or a collection like them Is not often given to one more than once or twice in a life time |
