Show AT THE EDDY RANCH i Held Family Under Subjection for Two Days Spokane Wash Auir fiFor two days and ns many nlghtr Tracy held the family of Farmer L D Eddy under un-der subjection Here again he showed the qualities of nerve and coolhended ness but these very qualities brought about his downfall Had he not allowed al-lowed G E Goldfinch the eighteen yearold boy to leave the ranch when he did the story of today might have been different but the outlaw had too much faith In estimating the terror his words of warning would give to an eighteenyearold lad STORY TOLD BY BOY The exploits of the famous bandit at the Eddy ranch are given by the eighteenyearold boy who was his servant ser-vant for over a day It was Sunday afternoon thntG E Goldfinch wan riding a horse across the prnirle not far from the Eddy farm He noticed a strange man camped out not far from where he passed To all appearances the stranger was having his supper but young Goldfinch paid no attention noticing nothing unusual In his actions ORDERED TO STOP Just as the boy was going by the camper called out asking him to have some supper With the reply that he had finished his supper Goldfinch did not even slacken the pace of hs horse and passed the stranger It was then that an imperative command from the stranger brought GoMflnch to a sudden stop He was ordered to come back This order the lad obeyed MADE HIMSELF KNOWN With his usual ceremony the outlaw soon made himself known Ho Inquired the way lo the nearest farm and was directed to the Eddy ranch Tracy at Mils time still had two horses One he rode the other the boy says was loathed loath-ed with groceries meat sugar coffee and bedding You go ahead and tell them I am coming commanded the outlaw ROPE LEFT A MARK Goldfinch readily complied and started start-ed ahead to announce the coming guest Tracy however kept close on the heels of the lad evidently not Intending to give him a chance to give warning On the way to the house Tracy noticed a rope hanging from his pack animal That leaving a bad mark remarked the outlaw and he slopped to gather In the trailing coils JJe then proceeded proceed-ed on his way to the Eddy ranch AT THE EDDY RANCH Arriving at the Eddy ranch Goldfinch Gold-finch performed the service allotted to him and soon Informed I the family who the visitor was The night passed without with-out any happenings so far as the lad relates In the morning Tracy llrst made his toilet A bath and a shave were Included In I the morning makeup the farmer and his men providing LIme soap towels and water MADE HIMSELF USEFUL When the men started for their work Tracy discovered that they were con structlnar rfn overhead track In the barn for the fall crop The outlaw decided de-cided to make hlmwolf useful and divesting di-vesting himself of his Winchester and one of his revolvers labored with the other men during most of the murnlng He kept one revolver however In the holster by Ills side ready for Instant action EXHIBITED HIS WEAPONS During the day the outlaw wanted hit other weapons which had been left wIth his bedding and traveling outfit He sent Goldfinch after the weapons and proudly passed them I around to the awesticken workmen They wore nl loi ant to handle the I weapons and in hpcct them but It Is said they took care not to have the muzzles of the guns pointing toward the outlaw KEPT MEN COVERED Tracy all Ibis time had a revolver hmself and allowed no opening for ito farmers to get the drop on him That the outlaw stood In no fear of Eddy and Ills men attempting to take advantage ad-vantage of the opening was vouched for by himself he having remarked to the farmer 1 am not afraid of you During the day the outlaw remarked that he needed a nev holster one of his revolvers being unsuppllcd Voting Goldfinch win Instructed to find the leather after which the outlaw soon made a bolster CAUSED illS RUIN Monday evening Tracy told Goldfinch he might go He was however cant tloiud can-t on pain of death not to I tell what had happened until Wednesday It I I was this very display of nerve which had heretofore made the outlaw apparently I ap-parently safe that this time caused his I ruin Goldfinch instead ot being sufficiently suffi-ciently tcrrorjucd to keep peace soon spread tho news and aroused a posse |
