ended bin career of crime RUN DOWN BY CITIZENS After haUling lie I ofllccrH oC two States after a wonderful flight of nearly near-ly 100 miles across Oregon und Washington Wash-ington Harry Tracy wa1 bunted down by five citizens of the little farming town of Creston but one of whom was even a deputy To them ly to be paid the 1100 reward Sheriff Gardner and posse arrived In time to guard the wheat field through the night but the work waa already done The outlaw won dead WHO COMPOSED POSSE The party to which belongs the credit WOK made up of the following citizens of Crouton C A Straub deputy sheriff sher-iff Dr IS C Lamer Maurice Smith attorney J 1 J Morrison railway section sec-tion foreman and Frank IilUenRren These nim armed to the tooth net out from Croston yesterday afternoon about oclock MURDEDOUS OUTLAW LOCATED They were working on the I Infonna tlon of the Goldfinch youth who had boon forcibly made the companion oC the Oregon convict for over twentyfour hours at the Eddy ranch Proceeding southeasterly for about eleven miles the pursuing party made all possible haste In getting I near the ranch of TJ 15 Eddy on Lake crook about three miles south from Fellowcs a station on the Washington Wash-ington Central railroad The country IH full of scab rock and the party took all precautions ns to ambushes OUTLAW IN BARN When within a few hundred yards or the farm they saw Farmor Eddy mowing mow-ing In one of his Holds Whllo engaging engag-ing him In conversation they saw a man Isuulng from the barn Is that Tracy asked one of the party Jt surely Is replied Eddy TRACY WALKS FROM COVER The patty soparalcd 1anlcr and Smith accompanying Kddy in the direction di-rection of lhe barn while the other two men swung around to cut off any break for liberty In smother direction Tho two manhunters stopped behind the barn on a silent eminence from which they could watch everything that wont on and the farmer continued up to the door Tracy came from the barn again and began helping his host In unhitching un-hitching the horses lie carried no rifle although ho had his revolvers in place SUSPECTED A TRAP The fugitive saw the men carrying rifles and turning sharply to Farmer Eddy said Who are those mon I dont HOP any mon said Eddy Tracy pointed out the two men on the hill waiting to be sure ol1 theIr man before they began shooting Eddy informed in-formed his companion who the men were nnd the outlaw made a leap for the barn door The ofllccrs stopping u little closer commanded Hold up your hands DASH FOR LIBERTY The outlaw Jumped behind Eddy and placed first the man and then his horse between himself and the officers He commanded the farmer to lend his horse to the barn where remaining under this cover he moved toward shelter When near the stable he broke and dashed Inside Tie quickly reappeared Tlllo In hand and started on a dead rundown run-down the valley OUTLAWS AIM FAILS Turning on the two men the desperado despe-rado fired two shots but without his usual luck neither bullet taking effect Without walling for further fighting Tracy toolc lo his heels down the valley lending l south from the barn heading for the brush RUNNING BATTLE The manhunters were oft In pursuit firing as rapidly as possible Coming to a rook he dodged behind it and resting his gun on the rock began a fusllade Eight shots In all were fired by the outlaw out-law not one hitting its mark Seeing that he was not succeeding he left the position and made a dash for a wheatfield wheat-field not far distant OUTLAW WOUNDED Just as he was entering the field he tumbled falllnjr on his face and crawled into the field on his hands and knees 1 By the time Tracy disappeared In the wheat field it was getting dusk The pursuers did not dare lo proceed as they did not know where their man was After holding a consultation they decided to surround the place and wait for daylight to come to their assistance In the meantime Sheriff Gardner with Policemen Stauffer and Gcmmrim of Spokane Jack OFarrcll of Davenport Daven-port and other reinforcements had arrived ar-rived on the scene and they went Into camp around the field during the night WAITED FOR DAYLIGHT Shortly after Tracys disappearance Into the wheat field the watchers heard a shot which sounded ns though corning corn-ing from about the spot to which he had crawled No Investigation was 7nadc however until this morning but that shot Is supposed to have been the one which sent the notorious desperado into the great beyond FOUND DEAD IN FIELD Early this morning as soon ns It was possible for the hunters to see everything every-thing going on around them an entrance en-trance was made into the wheat Held In a few minutes the party came upon the dead body of Harry Tracy lying amid the grain with his face turned toward to-ward the sky His loft hand thrown over his head held a Ificallber revolver revol-ver which had evidently inflicted the mortal wound The thumb of his hand was on the trigger of the pistol Ills right hand thrown across the lower part of his body firmly grasped the barrel of the famous riO30 Winchester DEAD SEVERAL HOURS The body was cold when found pointing point-ing to the belief that the shot hqard by the guards about 8 oclock last evenIng even-Ing was the fatal one Upon ecaminatlon it was found that lie wound which resulted in the outlaws out-laws death was inlllctod by a 45caliber revolver held clone to his forehead Tho top of his head was badly mangled WAS WOUNDED TWICE Two bullet wounds on the left leg showed the cause of the mans despondency despon-dency One shot had broken the log between be-tween the ankle and knee The other cut lhc tlbial artery whiflfli of Itself was sufllclent cause for doith It Is believed that both of those shots woro recMvcd after the convict left the shelter of the rock and made his break for the wheat field TRIED TO STOP BLEEDING The murderer had taken a strap and buckled it tight around his log in an attempt at-tempt to stop the bleeding Despite the tightlyfastened strap the bleeding continued until he probably realizing his hopeless condtlou ended the struggle strug-gle He was dressed in blue overalls a white shirt and wore no roal or vest He had si bicycle cap on bin head and a pair ol rough heavy shoos on his feet He had only one rllle with him and two revolvers one in his hand and the other inside his trousers QUARREL OVER REWARD Sheriff Gardner of Lincoln county and his assistants arrived on the scene in time to help in the final discovery of ho remains and It Is stated that he maintained that himself and deputies were entitled to at least a shore of the reward This was disputed by the Cros ton party the members of which maintain main-tain that they did the work and to
