on Account Ac-count or Irregularities The first business session of the City Council as a board of canvassers to canvass the vote cast at the late city election developed nothing approaching a sensation > The subject of 0 contest was not even mentioned before the board and not more than half 0 dozen spectators were present at any onetime one-time Chairman Leary of the Democratic Demo-cratic central committee looked In for a few minutes only and made no suggestions sug-gestions bearing upon the work oC the board CANVASSED FIRST WARD Only the votes of the eleven districts of the First ward were canvassed last night when a recess was taken until 7 oclock this evening when the returns re-turns of the Second ward will be taken up This Is the ward in which the contest con-test by the Democratic central committee commit-tee iu threatened and It Is taken for granted that there will be no lack of public Interest In the proceedings tonight to-night INTEREST IN SECOND Interest In the canvass of the vote of this ward Is heightened by the claim of the Democrats that they have made a discovery which it is believed reduces the plurality of George D Dean Republican Re-publican candidate for Councilman lo two votes It is related that In tho Fifteenth Fif-teenth district one of the judges of election counted 72 votes for Bur hlge while another Judge made his vote only Cl I Is further related that the Judges havIng been In a hurry to get downtown down-town to hear Iho return agreed lo split the difference and put down Burbldges vote as lOS Assuming therefore that the man Socialist lost 2 In the Fourth COST OF THE ELECTION The Council met yesterday noon asa as-a board of canvassers and after referring re-ferring the election his to the finance committee adjourned until an tellers Councilmen Davis Tuddenlmm and Sharp The canvass of the vote was taken up with little formality beginning with district No 1 and proceeding in numerical order The returns of each precinct were care fully examined and the names In the poll hook were counted and compared with those checked oft in the ofllclal register In nearly every case there was a discrepancy of a few votes duo lue to the carelessness of the Judges of election in checking the names In the register This caused a great deal of delay by necessitating the comparing of names by the canvassers to see that those on the poll books were also on the official register In district No1 there were 408 voles on the poll list and 105 checked on the official register The vote was passed as returned District No 2 showed 511 names In the poll book and 534 checked In the of llclal register The poll book was not properly certified to by the Judges of election but this Irregularity ty was not deemed fatal I The Third district cast 429 votes and only 407 had been checked in the resIster making n discrepancy of 2L votes which was duly adjusted There was one challenge In this district TROUBLE WITH THE FOURTH When the returns of the Fourth district dis-trict wen opened It was found that the ofllclal register which should accompany accom-pany them was missing and that J J Whlttaker one of the judges had failed to sign the poll book The district was paeacd until a messenger could bring the register and Mr Whlltnkers slg naturo When tlnally passed upon It was found that the districts vote numbered 511 and that there were no further Irregularities The ollleinl returns of the Fifth district dis-trict were signed by only one of the Judges of election and the tally list showed only 171 votes cast when t the number should have been 272 It was found that the error had been made b > duplicating the number 301 and the mistake was corrected by the can aHHers There was n discrepancy of I only two votes between
