Show THE LOCAL TAX LEVIES The Board of County Commlsploners has fixed the tax levy for 1002 l five tenths of a mill less than In 1001 The total rate In the county In 3809 was 32 mills in 1900 if was S5 mills in 1901 the amount was 72 mills and this yenr It will be 67 mills The levy for school purposes is 22 mills the same cs last year and will net to the schools about 3500 more than In HOI because of the Increased assessment values In limo county Nearly SliOOO of the additional sum will rome to the city school board The remainder of the county levy I 15 mills includes a half mill for Interest on county bonds and I mills for general gen-eral purposes The sum netted to the county will be 31SG220 as against 201 Tsp raised last year a t the higher rate The reduction made this season is the more important from the fact that thus far In 1002 the records show more than 8000 expended on the roads and bridges account In the county above the same I period in 1901 as well as a special paving pav-ing tax of SH300 for Second South street past the county jail property and an expense of at least SSOOO for the general election this fall Notwithstanding these Items I aggregating nearly 2000 the board of commissioners expects to do as much work on the roads In the next five months as was done In the same period 1 In 1901 and to leave with the property owners the 20000 represented repre-sented by the hal mill reduction in the rate That the Commissioners arc safe In their estimate Is evidenced by the I fact that county warrants are within eighty days of redemption on the funds gathered from last years levy whereas a year ago they ran over six month before redemption This Is the condition condi-tion nt the time of year when finances Ire lowest Just before taxes begin to come Inund shows the county to be practically on a cash basis with reduced re-duced taxjitlon In that division of government gov-ernment The county officers explain this satisfactory showing by pointing to Ui < 5 fact that the collection of foes licenses and taxes has been made more closely than ormclI The levy for city school taxes has not been formally fixed yet hu will be reached this week The rate probably will bn S5mills the same as last year The estimate submitted by Ihe Board G Education calls for i5Q000 for general maintenance 75000 for buildings anal grounds 33000 for Interest on bonds and 135CO for the Sinking fund Bonds to the amount of 15000 also become clue this fiscal year For the general maintenance main-tenance account Is figured that SMOOO will come from the State tax and laud fund and 302100 from the county tax How Otis last Item could have been placed at such a sum when last year the entire county school tax netted less than 590000 docs not appear clear for there never was n shadow or reason to believe that t the county tax would be pushed up to such a ngure The receipts re-ceipts from the Slate fund were S5S172 lust year and arc likely to be a little more this yenv while the county fund will net the city hoard about SGOOOO so that with ordinary care the city schools arc well provided for There is some SGOCn yet lacking In the Hlnklnc fund aside from the estimate submitted by the Board of Education for the payment pay-ment of the bonds maturing In August and If the city 6choolb urd fs I not able to raise the Hum otherwise u tax there for will have to he levied With the S3 mills rate however It Is reasonably certain that the lmr ln will be covered and the bonds bo led en d Without further levy The financial showing In these levies Is most gratifying and the reduction In the county tax IB a highly satisfactory action |
