Show BICYCLE BILL VETOED Mayor Favors Idea if Amended Sons So-ns Not to Endanger Shade Trees Mayor Thompson yesterday vetoed the ordinance recently passed by the City Council Imposing a tax of 51 per annum an-num on each bicycle the revenue from such tax to be used for the construc tion of a bicycle path along the sidewalk side-walk on each side of all unpaved streets I n stating the reasons for his cloth clo-th Mayor finds fault with that provision pro-vision of the ordinance which requires the present Irrigation ditches to bo Jlllcd up and directs that such ditches shall be placed outside the bicycle paths He points out that this change In the location of the ditches would remove re-move them too far from the almde trees and would unquestionably result In killIng kill-Ing many of the trees besides seriously injuring many others The Mayor says he Is strongly In favor of preserving the shade trees and will resolutely opposo anythIng which threatens their destruction destruc-tion He says he would approve the ordinance If It should direct that the paths for bicycles be built In the center of the streets or alongside the Irrigation Irriga-tion ditches as they arC at present located lo-cated The Mayor recommends that section nine of the ordinance be so amended that the city treasurer shall be required to issue a receipt for the tax and the City Recorder shall then be required to issue the license upon the presentation of such receipt If the suggested changes are made by the Council he says he will approve tho amended ordinance or-dinance |
