Show rBIGATION BILL HODEETD I House Committee Holds Sleeting to Suggest Changes In LTeasure LTRIBUNE SPECIAL Washington April 5The House Committed on Irrigation held a meetIng meet-Ing today so to modify the pending irrigation bill au to make It conform jwIUi the Ut iot trie gresIdent or rather 3omake the meaning dnd tiff tent of the bill so plain that no misconstruction mis-construction could be placed on any of Its provisions Section 8 of the bill which provides for State control of the waters Is the principal bone of conlenllon In the measure NEWLANDS AMENDMENT Mr NewJands of Nevada offered an amendment to time bill changing tIme phraseology of this section so as to preclude any possibility of adding any powers to the States In addition to those they already possessed In regard to thc control of waters within their boundaries or under State laws This It Is understood will be satisfactory to the President TO PREVENT SPECULATION Sections 3 and 4 of thc bill were also amended so as to prevent any speculation specu-lation in irrigated lands as It was feared by some that large corporations corpora-tions and Individuals would secure vast tracts of land for speculative purposes Under thc amendment proposed pro-posed this cannot be accomplished by any means or through any source The members of the committee feel hopeful that the bill as It is amended will pass the House and secure the approval of the President |
