Show S AT THE SMELTER Eleven Oclock Shift Partly Filled All Quiet and Orderly After the closing down of the furnaces fur-naces at it oclock there were few men around the works save those engaged at the roasters copper works crushers and sampling works Once hi a while one or two of the men who had decided to quit until their demands were satis fied strolled around took In the situa lout and vanished On the streets nf Murray and in the public places the situation was discussed and it soon ho came evident that there wouLd probably La enough men ready when the whittle o rw at II I I alleged trouble and on their return re-turn to Murray pronounced the story which ly that time was generally believed be-lieved to have no foundation that the Sandy men had no grievances and hud F never even hlntud at a strike in a serious I seri-ous way Thls was tomewhat of a I dumpener U C those who thought they saw a ray of hope In that direction THE NIGHT SHIFT At the afternoon meeting at which the coin FilL ict reported tho smelter companys refusal of demand the old commltieo on grievances was relieved of further duty and a new one consisting con-sisting of O I Olson R J J Fannell William I Randall I Thomas Hoetler and William I Wright appointed These rillid a mewling of the smcllcrmen for 1030 the place of rendezvous to be the slag floor In front of the furnaces fly 1030 there were probably 150 persons present a great many of whom were boys There woiv no speeches made but oonsldirablu missionary work was done In a quiet way with the Idea of Inducing Induc-ing those who might desire to go tu work on the 11 oclock shift to change their minds When the whistle blew Indicating that It was time lo go to work Superintendent Super-intendent Tucker announced that nil who desired to go to work would be welcomed A few who had gathered around him announced their I intention p of remaining with the company and they were soon joined by others In ten mlnnla It was SJCMMI that there were enough to start at least one of the fiu iiaceH and Jive minutes from that time between fifty and sixty had rolled up their sleeves and gone 10 work The others who were present retired to the slag pile and it was given out that a meeting of all said temmCti who wore noi then In the employ of the company would be held at Harkers hall today at 1 oclock There was a slight demonstration for a 1 few minutes the terms scab being hurled derisively at the men who were engaged in their old occupations but no response was made and in fifteen minutes after the shift had started to work there was nol a striker on the I property of the company and a stranger would never have imagined that there had even been a ripple of excitement ex-citement A NOTICE IX RESERVE Superintendent Tucker yesterday received re-ceived from Manager Jones notices which he Intended lo post up this morning in case the 11 oclock shift had remained out and not enough men had reported lo start the 7 oclock shift this morning to the effect that because of the Inability to obtain men the smelter smel-ter would bc closed for an indefinite period Whether these notices will be posted this morning or not depends upon lie number of men who report for duty this morning It is not believed however by several of the strikers who were seen last evening thai this action will be necessary as they were free to say that while many of the men iuiighit stay out they believed that enough would be present this morning to run the furnace and If that be the cane then the strike they believe will be virtually over The fact that there were enough men ready to start one furnace last night had a disheartening effect on the others While so fai as could be learned no threats of violence had been made against those who desired to go lo work some of the smellermen those of the most Ignorant class wore afraid they might bc injured and this fear kept some from going to work last nltrhl These will be on hand this morning One Finlandcr who had gone In work repenled of his action and taking up his lunch bucket walked away Being asked by a reporter why he had concluded to quit he said ho had no grievance against the company bul he did not like the idea of the other oth-er men saying he was scabby EFFECT ON THE MEN Speaking of the effect lie closing oC the smeller would have Superintend out Tucker showed that the payroll of the company amounted to SiM000 per month the greater proportion of which went to poor men and most of the money was spent In Murray and thIs cltj The shutting down of the smelter for three months even said one of the prominent business men of Sandy meant ruin lo the merchants there Besides tills If the ores were enl elsewhere to bc smelted Salt Lake would loc niuchl as well While yesterday was a momentous day fur Murray this mornings work will also be looked forward to wIth a good dep of concern |
