Show BICYCLES AND VEHICLES I I I As Such They Have No Business on I Any of the Sidewalks Editor Tribune In Vjlew of the fact that an effort Is to be made at the next City Council meeting to take action In reference to keeping the bicycles off tho sidewalks must say that If adopted adopt-ed the city authorities arc not doing more than Justice demands I This Is the only town of any Importance Import-ance in this broad land where pedestrians I pedes-trians rights as far as using the sidewalks side-walks are concerned are interfered with by vehicles and the courts In I other States have decided that bicycles are vehicles and It stands to reason that no city legally has power to give I up the sidewalk for riding purposes I presume hardly a day passes 1 that someone IB not run over and It appeals ap-peals to common sense how can a pedestrian pe-destrian always avoid a bicycle especially espe-cially 1C it Is I coming from behind und the rider Is careless as many are and I a persons hearing Is not keen enough to hear ths tiiikle of tho bell which la I not always used 1 and besides little children cannot be expected to know enough to avoid the wheel rider I rhen again people who are of a nervous temperament always feel thankful If they return homo safely I after dodging the numerous wheels that serpentine fashion arc using the light of way lleCorenco < Is made In todays Tribune to bicyclists complaints that the streets are too muddy to use after sprinkling Possibly the wagon drivers might exercise a little diligence and leave a pathway on both sides of the I streets so that tioubje in a great measure meas-ure could be obviated Mr John Sharp Jr representative < I of tho National Cycling association estimates es-timates that nearly half of the residents resi-dents of the city are riding wheels this seems ridiculous for basing the population at 50000 what Intelligent person for a moment would consider that over 15 per cent are using bicycles bicy-cles It can therefore easily be demonstrated demon-strated that the nonusers are by far in the majority and In the interests of tliQt majority among whom are a few I taxpayers repeal an obnoxious ordinance ordi-nance if in the name of Justice only I Yours truly VBRITAS Salt Lake City May 21th I |
