C White for 41 years an army array bandsman was officially retired at retreat formation at It Governors Governor's o Island N N. y July 31 At the services attended by Gen Courtney H. H Hodges First army commander and staff Bandsman White heard the band he led play playa pla a 1 medley of eight of o his compos compositions compos hons which represented his work in music since he joined the army when he was 21 years ears old at Fort Banks Mass During Durins his time in the service he had studied at the New Eng Eng- England land Conservatory of Music and won a scholarship at the tho Institute of Musical Arts now the School of Music New York City At the institute he was Vas associated with Walter Damrosch New York symphony orchestra conductor and andi i played In the string section of the orchestra several times Umes He Ie was transferred in 1920 to the army music school at Washing ton D. D C. C where he served as principal until 1928 when he went wenton on a tour of duty to the Hawaiian islands From there he was trans trans- transferred transferred transferred to Governors Governor's Island and remained there until he retired One of the high lights l of his S S career was s in 1919 when he led a band down Broadway in New York City to welcome Gen John J.
