S BENSON DENSON President Harding Harding College Searcy Arkansas CONGRESS MAKES A ACO COMEBACK CO The Congress was our first war post Congress and it faced laced mountains of oC problems Moreover it was a Congress of oC a different party from that of oC the President Thus handicapped ped the Congress Con ess worked hard to tl get set as far as it did By working hard sometimes despite dis dis- disagreement disagreement agreement with President Tru Tru- Truman Truman man the Congress that recently adjourned ran an independent course and made ma c a great record During depression days i a l be be- bewildered bewildered Congress took orders from the strongman This was approved by many as the best kind of oC unity for lor the nation Unity is a fine thing When pur pur- purposes purposes purposes poses are arc sound and methods are arc right unified un action can bene bere- benefit fit the people But Dut the United States Slates Congress was not created by h the founding fathers fath rs to al always al- al always ways say yes to the nations nation's president No Rubber Stamp Starns The whim and fancy laney of oC a poli poti political political leader no matter how great t the leader may not be to the best interest of our people That Thatis is perhaps why the the founding fathers created the three branch branches es of our government as they did the legislative to pass the laws the executive to carry they out and the judiciary to provide justice Knowing Kno these things many persons wondered whether Congress Con ress would ever regain its rightful place The Congress had done just that If ever a Congress Co gress de de- denied denied nied the rubber stamp process this one did so The statute and aud dignity of Congress appears to tobe tobe tobe be returning It would hardly har Uy be possible for Congress in a nation like ours to please everyone But Bat D t everyone of us can be thankful that the Congress has done much to restore the integrity and strength that our national legis legis- legislature legislature legislature lature should have The Peoples People's Safeguard This Congress deli not always answer yes to the President There were times when it said no At least four major bills were passed over the veto of the President President- Congress did not do this just to nettle Mr Truman The Both Congress was doing things upon its own conviction following its own best judgment Doing this Utis Congress showed that the ultimate te welfare of the na nation na- na tion lion was its objective There was no vindictiveness but instead a determination to rely upon its own judgment ra ra- rather rather ther than upon that of or the tle tive tive lone Our people can find no quarrel with this once they think about it It is only that kind of Congress which will con can continue continue to safeguard the welfare of our nation under the Con Con- Constitution We Ve can never afford aCford to forget the importance of Con Con- Congress Congress gress gross as the peoples people's will in this republic More Than 1000 Bills DUts The hard work of the Congress is shown by the fact that it passed more than 1000 bills and conducted numerous investigations It studied and acted upon nearly 30 major pieces of legislation Among these was the Taft Taft-Hartly Taft hartly bill- bill called the slave labor bill bill which has not enslaved but has already aheady shown its workability Of OC great eat significance too was the leadership that Congress showed in world affairs The Both Congress led the na nation na- na nation tion out of isolationism and into the leadership of loving freedom nations of oC the world Congress did much to retrieve lost pres pres- prestige prestige tige for lor America in the realm of international affairs I believe belie every citizen should appreciate the great Job the Congress did in bring back the integrity of ofa a legislature which was set up to represent the people le I am grate grate- grateful ful fu u to our hardworking legisla legisla- tors I |
