Show CONDITION AT HONOLULU Surgeon Carmichael Reports Regarding Regard-ing tho Plague in Hawaii Washington Jan SurgeonGener al Wyman today received a long report from Surgeon Carmichael who Is stationed sta-tioned at Honolulu bearing on the condition con-dition of affairs there regarding the bubonic plague Under date of December Decem-ber 18th the reports says that five cases fve and five deaths from what Is pronounced pro-nounced to be bubonic plague have occurred curred in Honolulu on the llth and 12th instant Dr Carmichael says the presence pres-ence of the disease was not suspected until the morning of the 1th when L Chinese patient died Anautopsy was held examination pointing strongly to the fat that death was caused by the bubonic plague Another case also Chinaman who had died on December llth was examined with the same result re-sult The symptoms previous to death were > hlgh fever 101 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit Fah-renheit rapid pulse 110 to 150 head achefc deliriums vomiting and pain and swelling I The duration of Illness In two of the cases wan three days and from three to four In the other seS Strained preparations from the Juice squeezed from the enlarged glands showed the presence In large numbers of a short bacillus rounded at both ends and closely resembling that of bubonic plague A guinea pig was Inoculated In-oculated on December 12th n rabbit on the 13th and a rat on December 15th The guinea pig and rat died December 17th The1 Chinese patient who died on the 12th was 2 years old and had resided In Honolulu for more limn a year Throe othe Chinamen all males and all 10 years old or over died on the 11th The fifth cane was that of 1 South I Sca IIar Ith i7 xears of tusc who died on the 12th A sixth case was reported on December 14th a Hawaiian aged 2S years fuJ This case Is considered doubt In fact says Dr Carmichael what 19 considered the plague bacillus has been isolated in but two of the cases caSe although the clinical symptoms were much alike In the first five cases reported re-ported The bodies of the deceased have been cremated All the places where deaths occurred have been hfo quar anlined and dlslnfecled The Hawaiian Board oC Health surrounded Chinatown by a sanitary cordon the city was divided di-vided Into sections and a houseto house Inspection at Inspecton once begun The State Council ha approprIated 25000 to begin the necessary nanitary work A receiving hospital will be work and l crematory is almost ready for use Communicaton with the other Islands Isl-ands except under quarantine restrictions quarantne tions has been prohibited and all vessels ves-sels plying between Island ports must undergo a detention period of at least seven days before proceeding to their destination Vessels from other islands are not allowed to cock at the wharves but must anchor In the stream The origin of the plague Is obscure but It is supposed to have been in some article of food clothing merchandise or rats from steamers Oriental foodstuffs food-stuffs and freights have landed and distributed dis-tributed within the past six weeks without disinfection No cases have occurred among the immigrants landed at tho quarantine station so far as 1 known All those attacked resided ia I the city for a year or more The report says the United States military mil-itary I authorities were promptly notified and troops on shore leave have returned to the only transport Warren with SOO colored soldiers for Manila She arrived ar-rived at Honolulu December thaod as no disease was suspected in Ihe cily the soldiers were given shore leave during dur-ing the time the vessel was taking on I supplies of coal She promptly left the harbor and anchored outside the reef where she was to remain until December Decem-ber ISlh before proceeding to Manila l on board were bathed and their clothing disinfected The transport Sherman arrlvpd on the 13th but did not stop proceeding to Manln without delay Dr Carmichael Car-michael says no new eases have been reported up to December ISfth and concluded con-cluded his report a follows I shall adopt all measures within my power to insure the safety of vessels leaving for United States ports but the absence of a plant for disinfection here Is severely felt at the present time and in view of this fact additional precau Lons should be adopted at all Pacific coast ports and such measures should I Insure the destruction of all vermin onboard on-board vessels |
