Show I MORE SMALLPOX HERE I I i Three Cases Discovered in Salt Lake Yesterday 1 I j MOTHER AND LITTLE ONES I Ij j Mrs W A Hobbs Living in the I Southwestern Part of tho City and I Her Two Small Children One a I Baby Found to Havo the Disease Thoy Had Had No Physician and tho Family Did Not Enow the Nature I Na-ture of tho Malady To be Taken Ito I-to Pesthouse ji i j 1 Three new cases of smallpox were yesterday added to the list of those in I Salt Lake City The new victims arc Mrs W A Hobbs aged 22 years and her two little daughters 3 years and 13 months old respecllvely The family resides at 635 South Fifth West street and the other members Mr Hobbs aged 30 years and a sister of Mrs Hobbs 12 years old have not yet been stricken News of the sickness of Mrs Hobbs 1 came to Dr A C Young yesterday from tho mother of Mrs Hobbs who I lives In another neighborhood saying that she feared her daughter had smallpox small-pox and asking him to attend to the I case Dr Young declined to act In the mailer under the circumstances and at once notified the City Board of Health C II Buckley an Immune was sent to Investigate and definitely locate the place as the lady who called for Dr Young had given no street number num-ber but said the house was near Fifth West and Sixth South Buckley first called at a house In that vicinity whereas I where-as shown by the directory a family of that name had lived but which Is now occupied by other parties Here I I he succeeded In finding a very nervous and badlyscared woman when his mission I mis-sion was told but got no Information In the direction sought Leaving there he I made Inquiry of some children on the I street ns to any sickness in the neighborhood neigh-borhood Theres smallpox in the Hobbs house down there they exclaimed and directed di-rected him to the place he was searchIng search-Ing for fOlGENUINE GENUINE SMALLPOX It required but a short time for Mr Buckley to satisfy himself that the disease was genuine He notified all the members of the family to observe a slrlct quarantine and made a report to the health ofllce Dr Keogh was notified and at once visited the unfortunate unfor-tunate family Dr Keogh on his return re-turn from visiting the Hobbs family stated that the wife and two children were suffering from smallpox without doubt and that In the case of Mrs Hobbs who has been sick less than a week there was more breaking out than in any of the other Sail Lake cases She broke out Iwo or three days ago On the children tho eruptions are Just appearing When asked for his opinion S as to the I possible spreading of the disease when It family thus without apparent exposure expos-ure was attacked replied I cannot speak definitely the conditions are too 1 uncertain There Is always a course for the disease People thus afflicted dont always tell all they know I did I I not see Hobbs himself he was out carIng car-Ing for his horses He may have clone I harm by going about carrying the germs In his clothing but T dont apprehend ap-prehend any clanger beyond what can be met If the quarantine is observed but of course I cant tell SOURCE NOT DISCLOSED Mr llobbs is a fish peddler hut he stated to Buckley that ho has not bemi peddling for a couple of weeks No physician had been employed I and the I family was apparently Ignorant of or at least In doubt as to the nature of II the ailment evidently thinking It i merely a breaking out and claimed to I be entirely unable to account for having taken It Only yesterday a neighbor I woman of the family who occupies one of the three In the terrace where the Hobbs family lives visited the llobbs house and the mother of Mrs Hobbs has also been a frequent visitor there rhese two and others who have been exposed will be placed in quarantine at once and the Hobbs family will betaken be-taken to the peslhouse today This Is I regarded as the most serious phase of the smallpox situation that has yet been presented In the other cases there has been Information as to Its source but In this instance the source of the disease Is not known If the statements of the Hobbs family are truo If Mr I Hobbs has been selling fish since the disease entered his home it opens up possibilities of exposure that will require the most exacting measures to nrotcvt the public health A serious side of the affair is the fact that children on the street were able to point out the Hobbs house as the one having smallpox and yet nothing was known earlier of the cases by the I health authorities |
