Show BROKE THE WORLDS RECORD Rube Shields Mnlces Marvelous TIlde on Bicycle Down Stairs from Salt 1nlaco Roof William Wyman Wlndomere Shields known far and wide as Rube Shields the Hayseed Cyclist last night performed I per-formed the remarkable feat of riding down n flight of stairs from the Palace roof to the Midway Nearly 2000 people peo-ple were thrilled and inspired by the I marvelous performance and barring1a slight tumble at HIP foot of the ladder I the act went off with remarkable smoothness The ladder Is 96 feet long three feet wide and extends from the roof of the south facade of the Palace to the ground at an angle of 15 degrees This angle gave to the ladder a star tllnglysteep appearance and when tho fearless rider appeared at tho edge of the roof prior to his bloodcurdling descent a shudder of horror ran through the big audience Shields bg showed his fearlessness by Jollying the I crowd Into a good humor and then like a sprite flying Into space he started I I start-ed on his mad ride down the steep ladder lad-der There were longdrawn breaths I on all sides and everybodys heart beat In their throats as he shot down to terra firma Xer plunk the front I wheel struck like a shot from 3 cannon can-non and Shields was thrown tweniy feet over the handle bars He picked himself up rnd smiled unhurt and withal with-al his lOn nerve left I was the greatest feat of steepstair riding ever seen In the world and Shields will repeat re-peat the performance every night this week The exhibition will take place Just after the close of tho fireworks performance and surprising to say it If free to everybody Immediately after Shieldss unexampled unex-ampled performance the large crowd poured Into the vaudeville theater where a special afterthefireworks lerformanc2 was given These performances per-formances will bo given every night this week In order to allow everybody who show attends the pyrotechnics to seethe I |
