the Irrigation of the Jordan valley and Salt Lake City The canal companies were represented by their officers and I many of their stockholders there being be-ing about one hundred persons present and N A Nelson the committee appointed I ap-pointed some time ago to investigate the feasibility of diverting the surplus I water of the Weber and Duchcsne rivers Into the Provo river which I empties Into Utah lake made its report I re-port through Its chairman Mr Page I f WATER GOING TO WASTE I He said the committee had found a great deal of water going to waste I I from the Weber river especially In tho I r spring and winter months which I j might as well be diverted Into Utah I lac and there stored for use In the dry season From conversing with the I i owners oC water rights In the Weber I river the committee was led to believo there would not be any serious objections I objec-tions raIsed to taking the surplus water of the Weber and the committee on behalf of the four Jordan valley canal companies and Salt Lake City had filed In Summit county notices of appropriation oC those waters which would amount to from 200 to 450 cubic feet per second or from 12D500000 gal Ions to 200700000 gallons per day of twentyfour hours for about six months of each year To divert this water Into the Provo river would necessitate ne-cessitate the cutting of a canal over Kamas bench for a distance of from eight to ten miles according to the route selected To cut such a canal twenty feet wide and four feet deep would Mr Page said cost about 40 000 and a tall of from four to five teet in Commissioner Wes terfleld Individually approved of the scheme and while stating that he had no authority to contract for the city Bald he would report to the Mayor and the City Council and gave It as his Individual opinion that the city would bear Its proportion of the cost of doIng do-Ing enough work to keep the appropriation appro-priation good until the matter could be finally determined DUCI1ESXE IN ABEYANCE Regarding the Duchesne river the committee had not made a full Investigation Inves-tigation and was not prepared to report re-port The meeting however continued the committee with instructions to continue Investigation of the Duchesne file appropriation on surplus water and report to a meeting to be called when the committee was ready to report INJUNCTION PROCEEDINGS ORDERED OR-DERED A discussion then arose regarding parties who were taking water from 1 the Provo river without right thereto It was said thereby reducing the quantity quan-tity flowing Into Utah lake and the board of cinul rresidents was instructed in-structed by unanimous vote to begin Injunction proceedings without delay against all parties taking water from the river who have not clearly established estab-lished rights to It WILT ERECT PUMPING PLANT The proposition which had been suggested sug-gested some time ago to erect a pump Ing plant to pump water from Utah lake into the Jordan the vote was carried by a narrow majority tho vote being 4G to 44 The board of canal presidents was Instructed to have an electric pumping apparatus Installed with as little delay as possible The cost of a suitable pump and connections connec-tions was placed at 16000 DREDGE DYKE OR BUY The final subject discussed was the meana which should be employed to make Utah lake hold without flooding the surrounding < country the additional addition-al water which It was proposed to pour I into It It was thought the lake level Fhould be raised eighteen inches above Qmpromlse point or about thirtyfive llichrs above Its Present level O P Miller suggested dredging and others thought dyking around the low shores would be a better way Another sug gestion was that It might be cheaper to buy the lr > nd on the very low shores and lot the lake spread over them A committee composed of O P Miller W B EnnlH and Jesse W Fox Jr was appointed to make an Investigation Investiga-tion of the matter and report as to dredging dyking and buying the low lands landsWANT WANT 100000 < 1 APPROPRIATED It wus then resolved to petition Con stress through Utahs Senators and ifeprcscntallvc to make an appropriation appropria-tion of 5100000 for the purpose of con verting Utah lake Into a pcrmanent reservoir Regarding the projuct to divert tho surplus waters from Weber and Du chesne rivers Int6 Utah lake City En Rineer Kclsey and State Engineer Dorcmua are of the opinion there are not physical difficulties but what can oc overcome but legal complications may arise from opposition by the pres I I ent users of
