recommendation to the i Council last night of the John Blom i qulst propertj on the north side of Fourth South as a site for the new city Jail and courthouse stating that the conclusion had been reached after thorough thor-ough Investigation I I Robertson Innocently asked how far the investigation had gone Cottrell replied re-plied with a tale of many sites visited and a return to the committees first love as the best thing offered lie said that the price on other lots was nearly as great as that on the Fourth South 10t6000 Here Robertson launched his objections objec-tions and expressed astonishment at the action of the committee and declaring de-claring that considering the expen djture of city funds committee had I not given n onethousandth part of the attention that would have been given I to a personal matter He was he said authorized to state that the lot north of the heating plant on Second East I 8 13 by 11 rods could be purchased for 3500lhe committee he said had not Investigated it r Hewlett said that A J White had taken him to look at the lot In question and wanted 1500 for it Robertson declared de-clared that White had no Interest In nor was ho agent foe the sale of the lot The lot he considered ample for the proposed building and that a Jail was I not to bo constructed for a city like Chicago or New York but for a city financially crippled Robertson suggested that a special committee be appointed to take up the question Cottrell would be be glad to sec the responsibility shifted but declared de-clared that the Robertson site was not southwest comer of Fifth West and Fifth South streets asa as-a site for the new crematory The lot Is of ample size for a second crematory when the city demands it it Is located on the Rio Grande Western railroad where a spur for landing fuel can be had It is less than ten blocks from the center of the city ancV by reason of the decreased haulage the service of I onethird of the teams heretofore employed em-ployed can be dispensed with and good crematory service can be had for 6000 a yearu decrease of 3000 The lot can be purchased for 3775 and the location I I lo-cation is further desirable because there are no residences of any value In the near neighborhood Consideration of the report went over for one week FOR LIGHTING FRANCHISE A petition signed by eightythree hotels restaurants and business housca wns received asking that llie application applica-tion of H C Edwards for the Merchants Mer-chants Lighting company for an electric elec-tric light franchise be granted The petitioners expressed the belief that the Immediate granting of the franchise fran-chise will beneficial to the citlzeno of the city Among the prominent signers were the Freed Furniture company Scott Strevell Hardware company Daynes Son GodbePltts Dru lil Frankcn Callaway Hoock Francis and the Vienna cafe The petition was referred to the Committees Com-mittees on Streets Municipal Laws and Improvements The Mayors recommendation for the placing of measuring weirs in the Salt Lake and Jordan canal the water of which has heretofore been distributed by I gilesswork was received and laid oveYEllEn WEBER WATER PLAN The Mayor transmitted Water Commissioner Com-missioner Wcstorflolds letter regarding the appropriation of the surplus water rights l of the Weber river and the plan to discharge it Into the Provo river His Honor said that the plan merited consideration of the city and he advised the immediate i appropriation of t SlOO to pay the citys share of the preliminary expense Mr Robertson moved that the matter mat-ter be referred to the City Engineer who be instructed report to the cbm mlttee of the whole next Tuesday night Councilman said the matter mat-ter was too Important for hasty action and its practicability would have to be passed upon by an engineer The 100 for preliminary work was not appropriated and the Land and Water Commissioners letter was
