Show I THERE MUST BE NO BREACH OF FAITH A contemporary noted for Its dense Ignorance and stupidity on school matters mat-ters In this city claimed yesterday morning that the relief voted foi the schools on Tuesday was because of legislation It favored and that The Tribune opposed what made the triumph I tri-umph of the school credit bill possible A most remarkably nonsencical proposition I prop-osition truly when It is remembered that the election was held under legislation legis-lation enacted years ago and that recent re-cent legislation had nothing whatever to do with it The facts arc that no l possible present relief could have come to the schools from this recent legislation 1 legisla-tion that The Tribune pointed this out when the effort was on to have the tax leY Increased at the recent session of I the Legislature and that we urged nt1 that time as the only proper recourse I the appeal to the people that has Just been taken It will thus readily be seen what an inconsequential little donkey our contemporary is When we add further that the board distinctly pledged I Itself to thc Governor before he signed the bill that it would not increase in-crease the levy unless increase should prove tobo necessary and thJit the vote of credit accorded on Tuesday was with the distinct assurance that this pledge would be carried out the assumption I sumption by our contemporary that the f increase would be levied may fairly bo termed scandalpus It was repeatedly and publicly stated luring the pen dency of the election held on Tuesday that the vote of credit would not increase In-crease the tax by the board This was stated because of the pledge made to the Governor coupled with the fact that In fact no Increase Is necessary The revenue of the board on the levy as It stood last year would give the board for the next qchool year a revenue reve-nue fairly reckoned at 5395713 the school expense all told cannot vcVy well exceed S3C7360 for the year ending l June 30 1900 the total was 31457092 which gives a surplus of 28353 at the end of the ensuing school year The pledge was that no increase of levy would be made unless it was found necessary It is seen and shown that no increase Is necessary therefore there can be no increase without a breach of faith and a determination to extravagance extrav-agance and waste I |
