Show I CARING FOR NATIONAL PARKS SupeiinteridenVsdiuola and General I Qrant Reserves Makes Report Washington Oct 7Capt Frank West of the Sixth cavalry acting superintendent the Sequoia and Gen Grant National parks In California forum has submitted his annual report re-port to the Secretary of the Interior The first of these parks Is the largest containing It Is estimated from 1600 to 300 > ot the mammoth sequoia trees for which California is noted The park Itself Is on a high table land from C300 to S500 feet In altitude and commands a view of some of the most magnificent mountain scenery In the Rockies He recommends In some detail the extension of the park boundaries to take In a portion of this mountain tract eastward to Mount Whitney and the main Sierra divide and northward to take in the King river canyon This section CapL West says exceeds In beauty and grandeur anything to be found in Switzerland and Is a part of the public domain until fitted for agriculture but of Importance as a game preserve and to conserve the water supply on which the Immense citrus fruit Interests of Tulare county depend The General Grant park Is only two miles square and lln very bad condition con-dition owing to fallen timber and rubbish which should be cleared away Immediately It contains over twenty one largo sequoias Including the famous Gen Grant tree and a little work would mako it marvclously beautiful spot One serious dajiger which also threatens tho Sequoia park is the presence of sawmills on private lands Included within the boundaries ot the park It is enid there arc 5110 acres parI I BO held The mills are ruining the I giant trees In their neighborhood us ji Jlng them In the most criminally wasteful I waste-ful manner taking only the clear timber and leaving the Immense tbpo to rot on the ground and bo 3 Jncn cob co-b fire to all the remainder of tho park Capt West recommends that these lands be appraised speedily and purchased by tine Government There has been little trespass tula Thcre but poaching and the Indiscriminate Indis-criminate slaughter of game as soon as he soldiers leave for the season threaten exterminate the larger animals Capt West recommends an uggregate appropriation of 21000 for carrying forward the various lines oC work next year |
