Show SOLDIERS LEAVE UBA WAR BUREAU PLANNING TO WITHDRAW TROOPS Largo Reduction in the Military Force in the Island Has Been Decided De-cided Upon Washington Juno According to reports recently received from Coy Gen Wood tho elections In Cuba passed over quietly and without disorder disor-der at any point and affairs generally I have become tranquil with no indication indica-tion of future trouble In consequence of this encouraging stale ot affairs the ofllelals of tin War department arc considering the question of a large reduction re-duction of the military force Jn Cuba 3t has been decided that some of the troops can safely be brought home within the next few months Nothing will be settled as to which regiments shall come until after Secretary Hoot returns to the city early next week There Is an impression however that the Fifth Infantry I stationed principally princi-pally In the Department of Santiago will bo the first Cuban regiment to return re-turn to the United States and that the Eighth Infantry stationed In the same department will follow soon after The return ol ese troops to the United States will enable the department to carry out ItfJ plan of sending regular troops from this country to the Philippines Philip-pines to take the places ot the volunteer volun-teer army which must be brought home and discharged by Tune 30 1901 Unless developments In China necessitate neces-sitate a change of programme the homeward movement of the volunteer troops from the Philippines will begin In the early fall and about SOQO or 10000 regular troops will be sent out gradually from this country to take their places |
