Show ARMY CANTEEN House Military Committee Hears Statement from Capt Wells Washinston Feb HAt the hearing I on the subject of the army canteen before the House Committee on Military Mili-tary Affairs today Capt Frank M Wells late chaplain of the First Tennessee Ten-nessee regiment testified In detail to the prevalence of drunkenness on army transports and In the Philippines Mr Wells repeated statements which he has made in lectures relative to the sale of liquor on the transports Zea landla and Indiana and related instances In-stances of alleged drunkenness at Manila Ma-nila hello and Cubu as well as on the ships When he referred by l name to a Tennessee Ten-nessee officer alleged to have been I drunk Representative Cox of Tennessee Tennes-see Interposed an emphatic protest saying that he would not hear this ofll ror malsne The committee determined deter-mined to avoid personal disclosures bj not allowing names to be used Mr Wells proceeded omltllng names He stated that at the request of the Secretary of War he had filed a formal sialement with the War department concerning these alert > < acts Representatives of the W C T U and oilier organizallons were also heard In favor of a Congrosoiomil enactment en-actment making more clear the law ahollshlnir the army canteen The committee com-mittee did not lake action on the subject sub-ject |
