Show 1 TIDDLYWINKS TABLE GOLF Several kinds of table or parlor golf have been Invented and put upon the market But about the simplest device of the kind originated the other evening even-ing when some young folk wearied of the usual indoor games and cast about them for something new and novel A box of tiddlcdywink chips was lying 1 on the table and a boy present had a sudden inspiration Hey boys he cried lets play golf with these chips Well whats YOUr scheme asked oneThe The inventor ruffled up his forehead < < in a thoughtful frown Then he said I Why we will lay out the dining room table as the course We will go around by the left side of the table so we can always play with our right hand Four holesono for each side I of the tablerwlll be enough This caught Ihe fancy of the crowd at once and there was a wild rush for the diningroom The tablecloth had been removed and a dark heavy cover had been substituted With a piece of white crayon borrowed bor-rowed from the schoolroom the Inventor inven-tor Ralph by name marked out a two inch square at a lefthand corner That will bo the first teeing ground he said About three feet from that square he placed two small books upright the Covers opened a couple of inches to make them stand upright These were about two Inches from each other so that by good playing one could pass between them and so escape the hazard haz-ard ardIf If you go plunk against a book explained Ralph why of course youll have to play back so as to loft over You cant lift the tlddledy wink out of a hazard and lose one as you do In regular golf but you must play it out every lime no matter how many shots are required A small saucer about two feel farther far-ther on constituted the next hazard If you played over It 1 all was well but if you landed in tho saucer you would be obliged to lift the tlddledywink out and place It back jivltli a loss oC two strokes Near the next corner of the table was the puttinggreen des ignated by another square about four Inches each way In the center of his was placed a small afterdinner coffee cup You were obliged to snap the chip into that in order to hole out The players found of course that If they just missed the cup and landed near It they were unable to make a successful shot until they got a little way from the cup New rules were made as a case for arbitration came up as when one chip rested on another preventing the un der one to play in his turn Ralph as Judge decided that In such a case the topmost man msut remove his chip one inch to the left or right of the un der chip but not forward or behind it A change was made later on regard Ing the hole It was found that the coffee cup was rather high to playinto and so some round shallow cutglass salt cellars were found which exactly filled the bill It was also found expedient not to have the line of play too near the edge of the table aRlt made one liable to send the chips rolling oft on the floor After a while the player 1 became so pro fiolent that even the bogle score was beaten and It was found advisable to increase the number of hazards A I couple of water hazards In the shape of a soup plate halffilled were intro duced with a penalty of two strokes attached As in real golf foursomes are possible but the best game is every man for himself Score cards are necessary but caddies are not You cant imagine what a jolly game this Is till you try it |
