Scoring of Preachers Who Have Opposed Mormon Doctrines Doc-trines They Are Spoken of ns Followers Fol-lowers of Christ for Gain Address V I by Mrs Scwall 0 At the Tabernacle yesterday between fiOOO and 7000 people more than half of whom were visiting Epworth Leaguers listened to Dr J E Talmagc expound the Mormon faith The strangers In ZIon were prepared tu give a respectful respect-ful hearing lo the explanation oC the peculiar creed but they did not cS pcct the criticism Hung at them by the speaker The church authorities doubtless knew that a large proportion of the visiting Methodists would attend at-tend the services and Dr TaImage was put forward lo laud the Morman tenets and he also took occasion lo criticise the organisations which have been active ac-tive In opposing Mormon doctrines His reference to denominational ministers min-isters as followers of the meek and lowly Jesus for gain and his charac lerixation of the ministry as a trade naturally excited much comment He llltened the situaliou to the time of lie I Apostle Paul when Kphesians opposed op-posed him and cried Kill him because be-cause his religion Injured their trade as mercenary devotees of Diana MRS SB WALLS ADDRESS Before and after the scrvjccs special music was tendered and enjoyed by the visitors as was the inlersting address ad-dress of Mrs May AVrlght Scwall president of the International Council of Women who preceded Dr Talmagc She spoke of new things referringto the new learning the new world the new theology the new woman and new Internationalism the latter being the principal theme of her address The Internationalism of conquest was cruel the Internationalism of commerce as represented by such types us Warren Hastings she said was scarcely less cruel than that of conquest The new Internationalism of which the emigrant Is the exponent is superior to cither of the other two From that kind of j internationalism has grown a better i and kindlier feeling among the peo pies of the earth The great intcrmi I Liornl expositions were one of the outcomes out-comes of that Internationalism The missionary and the teacher the speaker referred to as potent factors in the new Internationalism and in passing spoke of the part woman had taken In the world as missionaries and teachers She had undergone sufferings suffer-ings and privations and by the new Internationalism I was being recognized for what she had done and was doing The new internationalism Mrs Sewall said had superseded the groans of the slave and wails of those held In bondage bond-age She spoke of the Internationalism peace conference with approval and regretfully referred to the primitive expedition of the nations to China and our own war with Spain NECESSARY FOR PROGRESS These things it appeared were nccssary incidents In the evolution of better things among them the new internationalism She spoke of the rivalry of the French and the Anglo Saxon IQJ supremacy in America of the Civil war between the North and the South the divisions and bitter feel lings which existed for many years in this country as a result of that Inter nicene struggle and how In the course of evolution the war with Spain had united the country and subordinated the feeling of sectionalism Internationalism Interna-tionalism she said was as far above nationalism as nationalism was above sectionalism What we needed was an international hymn which would unite all nations as our national hymn America unites all citizens of the great Republic The truth that all nations na-tions of the world arc of one blood should be taken as a reality and will be so when the new internationalism and the cooperation Instead of the rivalry of commerce attains the fullness full-ness and power toward which it la marching In conclusion Mrs Sewall drew a pretty word picture of the unity and harmony which should prevail pre-vail among all sections of the human race taking for illustration the great Tabernacle organ the varied parts of which operated so harmoniously as to produce the most exquisite music HE CONDEMNS MINISTERS Dr J E Talmagc who then ad dressed the congregation spoke of the Mormon church as the church of Christ guided not only by the Bible but by revelation In these latter day given by God tu his servants Belief in continuous revelation he said was a cardinal principle In the Morman Hiurch and for this belief the church he fluid had been persecuted and mis represented by l literary scandal mongers mon-gers but above all by preachers of the gospel preaching for hire and divining for money If any of such are present said the speaker I mean it for you I dont Include the honest saver of souls It is no crime to take a salary for your work but dont make merchandise of the gospel of Christ and take to preaching because it Is an easier way of making a living than some other forms of labor Dr Ta I in age said that although the Mormon church was the only true church it did not follow that all outside out-side of that church will be lost He had more respect for the inhabitant of Africa who lived according to his light than for pcpple of clviliod coun tries who did not live according to their spiritual advantages CALLED OPPONENTS IGNORANT Dr Talmagc said luit the opposition to the Mormons was due to ignorance People were lllled with prejudice against them and could not do them justice If people would only investigate investi-gate for themselves and not bo guided by false reports it would be otherwise other-wise Some people would not investigate investi-gate the Mormon faith because they were themselves afraid they would be convinced that Mormonlsm was nob the religion of Joseph Smith Brigham Young or Lorenzo Snow but the re ligion of Jesus Christ and nothing less was claimed for it It was not the common people who were responsible for the persecution the Mormons had endured It was those who spread false reports about them socalled leaders and there was always al-ways a crowd willing to blindly follow any one who set himself up as an authority au-thority This people had already contributed con-tributed a large share of the blood of martyrs which had been shed In the world The speaker said he had respect for those of all creeds provided their fol lowers wero honest and sincere lie had toleration for everybody and had good friends amojig the Presbyterians Methodists Baptist Catholics and others and would not eay because they did not see things as he did that they would be damned The people I object to he eaid are those who make a trade of saving souls for gain RESENTED INSINCERITY CHARGE Dr Talmagc said that he could tolerate the charge that Mormons were In darkness but that the man who said they were insincere was either an ignoramus or a liar As a proof of their sincerity he cited the trials at Nauvoo and Jvirkland and the building up of the church here He declared It to belie be-lie only church of Christ and proclaimed pro-claimed the right of the Saints to receive re-ceive the priesthood of God The Mormons Mor-mons had the true authority and ho wanted to know if the ministers were sure of their authority to speak for Christ |
