Show ORANGECROP RUINED Whole Orchards in Southern California Devastated FRUIT IS BLOWN AWAY Most Disastrous Wind and Sandstorm Sand-storm in Thirty Years Sweeps Over Great Orange E3gion of the State Trees That Have Withstood Winds for Hears Blown Away Many Buildings Damaged Pillars of Sand Cover Everything in Sight Traffic of All Kinds Suspended Los Angeles Oal l Dec 27A windstorm wind-storm of unusual force and destructiveness destructive-ness has raged today all over the southern south-ern part of California The storm is j what Is locally known as a Santa Ana and carried with It fine dust from the desert to the east that fills the air and obscures the vision at dls ttances nore than a few hundred yards Reports from surrounding towns report much damage wrought by the wind to oranges and some damage to small buildings Railroad traffic is delayed and In some Instances entirely obstructed ob-structed TRAINS TIED UP The storm Is heaviest In the vicinity vicin-ity of Col ton and Pomona between which places three passenger trains on the main lIne of the Southern Pacific are stalled owing to sand piling upon the track to the depth of two feet In places and resisting all efforts to keep the tracks clear DAMAGE AT RIVERSIDE Reports from Riverside the heart of the great orange region sixty miles east of Los Angeles state that Immense Im-mense damage has resulted from the high wind Oranges have been blown from the trees aid In some cases the trees themselves going down before the force of the storm From all accounts Ithc loss to orchardists In the Riverside district will be In the neighborhood of 5000 boxes SEVERE AT REDLANDS At Redlands the storm was very severe se-vere but the damage was not serious Sand piled up on the railroad tracks lo the depth of three feet and obstructed ob-structed truffle during the day Tel frgrfivh and telephone wires hate suffered suf-fered to more or less extent throughout the storm area and communication with many places is difficult to establish estab-lish The wind ceased at Redlands late in the afternoon 1 COLTON THE STORM CENTER Colton seems to have been the very center of the disturbance and the wind has done considerable damage to fruit and small buildings Sand blocked the railroads and 1p trains have moved In that viqlnitv since mornlnff The storm reached Its height at 4 oclock in the afternoon and finally subsided after that hour DUST AT LOS ANGELES The only Inconvenience suffered In Los Angeles from the storm wns due to the line dust that filled the air and obscured the sight Very little wind accompanied the dust storm here To the south of here however the storm approached a syclone In Its Intensity and much daihogc is believed to have resulted Owing to the lack of facilities facili-ties for communicating with many outlying out-lying points tonight the full extent of the damage will not be learned until tomorrow |
