Show COLORED REPUBLICANS MEET I McKinley Club Is Preparing for Effective II I Ef-fective Campaign Work The colored Republicans of Salt Lake have scented the pplltlcal battle from I afar and are lining up for effective campaign work The McKInley club which has not had a meeting since the last election cot together last night on the second floor of St Marks schoolhouse school-house P H Robinson the club president presi-dent called the members to order and explained briefly the necessity for united action by the colored voters of the city The next speaker was Bruce Johnson chairman oC the 1 executive committee of the club who urged the members to promote the growth of the organization Chairman Robinson discovered dis-covered Councilmen A A Robertson and A J Davis among the visitors and called upon them for a few remarks Both gentlemen complied The former said 1 am trlmply a candidate for the nomination and I hope for your support sup-port at the primaries If I am nominated nomi-nated I desire your votes and If I some other man is nominated I hope you will give him as cordial support as you would give me Mr Davis also announced himself a candidate for olllce and added that It would be a great pleasure to him to do anything he could for the members of the club W W Taylor editor of the Plain dealer was called upon for a speech and called attention to the need for unity among the people of his race He moved that a vote of thanks be given to the Councilmen for their presence The motion wao carried unanimously Before adjournment the = chairman again addressed the club He announced an-nounced that the executive committee would meet next Wednesday night to arrange for registration and for future sessions of theclub Viking Club Gathering = Andrew Jensen of the Historians office of-fice was the principal orator before the Viking club at the meeting held In the St Marks school building last evening He recalled the time when Scandinavians Scandina-vians were not given places In any of the city departments and said that the I Improvement in their political opportunities oppor-tunities was due to the timely agitation begun by himself and other sons of the North a few years ago We do not claim he said any special consideration considera-tion because of our nationality We all rejoice that wo are American citizens hut we do claim that we should not be discriminated against because we are Scandinavians President R Matson presided over the deliberations of the Vikings Ten applicants for membership were received re-ceived into the club Political Holes = George Westervelt will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for City Attorney Mr We8tervelt is one of the best known young attorneys of the city and has many friends both in and out of the party S S There seems to be an impression in some quarters that a Constable for the city is to be elected thin fall This Is not the case however and the live Constables Con-stables now in olflce In the city will hold until next fall The new law throws Salt Lake City Into one precinct of Salt Lake county and the Constable for that precinct will be a countyofHcer and will not be chosen until the county election elec-tion next year S City Attorney F B Stephens will be a candidate for rcnomlnatlon by the Democrats Mr Stephens says = he never contemplated becoming a candidate candi-date for the Mayoralty although many of his friends urged him to enter the race Mr Stephens says he cannot afford af-ford to neglect his law practice to assume as-sume any position In the same line The City Attorncyshlp he says Is in effect adding one more client to his list and as he has now got in touch with the duties of the office he would not mind serving a second term a The recent displays of indecision on the part of J S Bransford regarding his acceptance or nonacceptance of the Democratic nomination for tho Mayoralty have caused a great many Democrats to predict that Charles Crane will be the convortlons nominee nomi-nee W r Tf the battle between RP MorrJn and Bishop Whitney for the Democratic Demo-cratic nomination for Treasurer should assume an appearance where a dark horse would stand a show of winning Frank Shlrer a popular Elk and best known as treasurer of the famous Kangaroo Kan-garoo = court will be entered In the race A J Davis = Councilman for the Fifth precinct announces that he Is a candidate candi-date for renomination and will make a strong fight for the nace |
