Show HEISTAND INQUIRY it i t One Witness Hakes Absolute Denial of Statements by MnJ Hawks Washington Oct 4Frank 31 At terholt of Akron O was the first witness wit-ness called today by the Senate Military Mili-tary Affairs committee In the Investigation Investi-gation of charges against LieutCol II 0 S Helstand Mr Atterholt had arranged a meeting with Clint BIdle Co of New York to be attended by Helstand Hawks and himself Ileistand however did not attend tho meeting and subsequently appeared entirely indifferent to the whole matter He said he did not have another meet lug with the Interested parties MaJ Hawks endeavored to show that there had been twomeetings but Mr Atter holt said positively only one had been held Gen W W Dudley one of the promoters pro-moters of the proposed company and an attorney In the settlement with Hawks described the preliminary steps taken In the organization of the company com-pany He said that Helstand had mentioned men-tioned tho names of Gen CorbIn Assistant As-sistant Secretary Melklejohn and Assistant As-sistant Secretary Allen aa friends oC his who would take utock In the company com-pany and MaJ Hawks had mentioned the name of Judge Boyd who would also go Into the company The stock he said was to be apportioned heretofore here-tofore explained by other witnesses Albert dc Buy vicepresident of i Flint Eddy Co testified to Moj Hawks telling him that he had Influential Influen-tial friends In Washington who would helD him His firm was interested In hemo and Hawks had told him he could assist the firm materially as he could obtain advance information as to the opening and closing of the Philippine Philip-pine ports Hawks had given the Impression Im-pression that he was able to Influence the opening and closing of the ports MaJ Hawks recalled said that De Buys had told him Hawks If he would furnish information In advance of the opening of the ports the firm would give him J5000 Hawks said ho obtaIned ob-tained and furnished this information De Buys again took the stand and denied these statements Louis Michener one of the proposed members of the hemp company related a conversation with Hawks In which the latter threatened Congressional investigation Irhcdld not get a Government Gov-ernment appointment |
