Show I LECTURE ON CHINA Missionary Herring Talks of the Pco plo nnd tho Wnr J The East Side Baptist church wag crowded to Its utmost capacity last evening the occasion being an addresS by the Rev Mr Herring the returned re-turned missionary from China who Is visiting friends In this city Ha Is i a most entertaining speaker and related interesting facts about the habits customs cus-toms and lives of tho Chinese and tho work being carried on by the missionaries I mission-aries In that country In relating the recent troubles Rev Mr Herring was Inclined to be most lenient with the Chinese and hoped that the Christian nations of the world would look upoji them with all possible charity and said he ell now a greater desire than over before that the light of the gospel 1 should penetrate Into that natlon and redeem It from the dreadful darkness Into which It has sunk Tho morals of tho Chinese were dwelb upon and tho speaker said they arc not so bud oa outsiders believe that profanity abounds much more In this country than there that the curse of drink Is not so great as here but the curse of opium Is almost appalling He felt cure however that Christianity would yet be the religion of that people nnd then the dreadful habit would be blighted out Tho religion of the Chinese was spoken spo-ken of at length and the speaker said It wan not through love of their Idola or gods but through a slavish fear of tho ovll spirits that they were constantly constant-ly making Bacrlnccs for their religion In closing Rev Mr Herring related tho recent troubles with the Chinese said It was their hatred of foreigners and everything foreign that caused tho uprising not their hatred of the missionaries mis-sionaries and thought the outlook was not an encouraging one He did not blame tho Americans for withdrawing the soldiers but thought It would incIte In-cIte tho Chinese to greater warfare nnd that when a settlement of the demands de-mands of tho nations was considered the Chinese would resist it and the whole country Would bo plunged Into war At the close of the address a collection collec-tion was taken and presented lo the speaker to help defray his expenses to hlii NortluCoroUna home |
