Show I NAVAL WORK OUTLINED What isProposed by Bureau for Coming Year I I ESTIMATES NOW COMPLETED They Aro Understood to Invcv 1 Little in the Way of Extensive or New Projects and to Cover Only tho Usual Requisites of the Service for the YearThe Chief Item as Usual is that for the Increase of the NnvyThls Will be About Twenty Million Dollars J Washington Sept 301n anticipation of the assembling o Congress two months hence October 1st has been set as the time for receiving the annual reports from the naval bureau chiefs outlining the naval work to be done during the coming year Ifost of the estimates are now completed and in the hands of Secretary Long and the more detailed reports will go In within the next few days Until they have been gone over by the Secretary no authentic details are available In the main however they are understood I un-derstood to Involve little In the way of extensive or new projects nnd to cover only the usual requisites o the service I for the year The chief Item a usual is that for the increase of the navy covering both construction and engineering engi-neering work on ahfTalreatly authorized author-ized This will be In the neighborhood of i 20000000 In the branch of yards nnd docks It ifl understood the total will be not far from 13000000 and will not involve 1 any additional dry docks I or extensive changes in our naval stations sta-tions In addition to the foregoing item for Incrcam of the navy there is tho usual sum for repair of vessels alreay In service which Is n considerable consider-able sum amounting this year to approximately ap-proximately 7000000 In the branch o steam engineering the estimates do not go beyond the requirements for carrying forward the regular service Tho Item of armor and armament Is of special interest In view of the controversy over armor but the future course regarding this probably will depend considerably on the result of the present efforts to get armor within the rate fixed by the last Congress |
