Show H MASON ABBOTT FINED COURT SENTENCES HTML TO PAY S300 AND COSTS Pica for Leniency Made for Defendant Defend-ant on the Ground that the Business Busi-ness Complained of Has Stopped IT Mason Abbott against whom the I jury brought in a verdict ot guilty on Wednesday evening fore having made Improper use of the malls appeared before Judge Hlner yesterday at 10 oclock for sentence Ills attorney AIr A-Ir Taylor stated to the court that Abbott Ab-bott had always borne n good namo and had HUe positions of much responsibility re-sponsibility He did not believe that Abbott ever Intended to violate the law and that he had ceased to manufacture manu-facture the articles in question as soon I as he had learned that the business was a violation of law He urged for these reasons and because of Abbott being n poor man with a large family that the sentence be made as light as would be consistent wlth the offense District Attorney Whlttemore responding respond-ing to an interrogatory from the court stated that there was no evidence to show that thp manufacture of the articles ar-ticles by Abbott had not been stopped and he was Inclined to believe that the business had ceased In passing sentence Judge Riner stated that Abbott had received a fair trial and that a just verdict had been rendered that under the statute the penalty for this crime was a severe one 53000 fine or five years Imprisonment but that the court because of the defendants de-fendants family and the recommendations recommenda-tions of the Jury and counsel would be lenient and that his punishment would be SCOO fine and the costs of the suit While the Judge was pronouncing sentence he was Interrupted by Abbott who said that he had discontinued the < business for which he was convicted I just as soon as he learned that he was violating law The costs of the action were 18415 which with ihe 300 fine making S1SI1D In all was at once paid r by Abbott V |
