Show OBJEGTEO TO IMMUNES I I Newman Raises an Objection in School Board l OPPOSED CO q PEW ACTION 1 r At the Heating 6f tha Board of Education I tion Lnst Evening Member From the Third Betrayed an Unexpected Apprehension Was Opposed to Vaccination Order but Now Ho Goes to Extreme of Opposing the Admission of Immune Children Use of Training School Building I The Board of Education held a short I meeting last night and appropriated lnone sufilcJent to ° pay Oft all itS un paId bills for the year The amount appropriated exclusive of the teach ers salaries for the three weeks < s due them before the holidays begin was 5 moP l teachers > payroll has not been completed yet but it will amount to something over 17000 thus making the total appropriation list somewhat In excess of 2170227 After the meeting had been called to order Newman arose with a protest against the action taken by Superin tendent Cooper in announcing to the public that vaccinated and immune children only would be admitted to the School after the holidays Mr New i man objected to the usu or the word l Imtrnmes He said there was noth lime In 1l f t rnl u < vvr U ui LIIU fjiuviuua meet lug to show that immunes should be admitted and he thought Superintend ent Cooper had exceeded his authority in stating immunes would be admit ted Newman objected to the admis slop of Immunes saying It was prob able children who had recovered from the disease sutficicntly to be released from quarantine might spread the In fection Critchlow asked Newman how many years he would make children who had had the disease remain out of school Newman replied that he would keep them out a month or two after they recovered anyway Mr Cooper then arose and explained the matter He said he had secured an Interpretation from the Board of Health which stated that Immunes were those who had recovered from the disease and had passed the Infectious stage and children who had been Unsuccessfully un-successfully vaccinated three times or more Immune was used in that sense Mr Cooper said and he argued that having tho disease and recovering was the most nearly perfect vaccination vaccina-tion obtainable It was suggested that I the Board of Health would be the best judge for determining whether a child was likely to spread the disease and might be relied upon to maintain quarantine quar-antine until all danger of infection had passed Mr Newmans sudden anxiety to protect the pupils against smallpox caused some surprise A communication from the State Land board allowing the Board of Education Ed-ucation to occupy for schcol purposes the training school building on the University square the Board of Education Edu-cation to maintain the building In good repair without expense to the State find to hold itself ready to vacate va-cate the building on thirty days notice no-tice was received and Clerk Moreton was instructed to notify thd State board of the receipt of the letter and the acceptance of the offer by a unanimous unan-imous vote of those present The building build-ing Is now occupied by the TJnion school Ella Dawson and Harriet Levis were employed as teachers to fill vacancies in the grades at salaries of 00 to 61 respectively I Frank Branting memberelect from the First precinct was present during the meeting and was an interested observer ob-server of the proceedings |
