Show 9 P REACllPEUNi f J j i < i l JJ > c SecorM Effort Made by the United States r s Government to Get Another Message 1 I I Mes-sage from Conger A1I of the Powers Have also Resorted to PrivateAgencies to Reach Their MinistersOne of the Last Acts of Col Liscum was to Undertake to Send a Private Dispatch to the Chinese I Capital I t I I i > y I I r Washington July 29 There Is a I growing expectation at the State department de-partment that news of the utmost importance Im-portance may be forthcoming at any moment from Peking Nothing was received today The cablegrams that wore received referred to minor matters mat-ters and did not touch at all upon conditions In the Chinese capital It Is believed that the basis for this expectation is the knowledge on the part of officials that certain machinery heretofore set in motion may result in the opening up of communication through some reliable channels EFFORTS TO REACH CONGER It Is known that second effort has been made by our Government Gov-ernment to get another message from Mr Conger and that nearly all of the powers also have resorted to private agencies In their own Interests with 1 a like object ONE OF LJSCUMS LAST ACTS The fact has just been developed that one of the last acts of the late Col Liscum before his death at Tien Tsin was to undertake to send a dispatch dis-patch to Peking Gen Dorward the British commanding officer at Tien Tsln also sent out two messengers and It IB believed the Japanese did the same Up to date not one of these messengers has returned to Tien Tsrn nor has there been a single word heard fiom any of them This fact however how-ever has not caused the abandonment of hope and this Is true particular of the messages expected from Minister Minis-ter Conger WU IS STILL CONFIDENT Minister Wu Is perhaps the basis for this hope on our part and he maintains main-tains an unshaken confidence In his original assertion that the news when It does come will show that the Icga tloners arc alive The mcssagereport ed to have come through Missionary Wilder ut Che Foo Is regarded as most promising Minister Wu had no cablegrams ca-blegrams himself today nor had the State department any directly from China MOVE ON PEKING Nothing further has been heard of the date bet for the beginning of the movement from Tien Tin toward Peking Pe-king and it Is hoped It Is saId here I that this Is a detail that must bo fixed by the military commanders upon the spot A message came to the War department depart-ment from the quartermaster on the Lennox announcing the arrival of that ship with the Conemaugh at Kobe Japan They have aboard the I mounts for the Sixth cavalry and although al-though they will start for Talcu at I once not less than live days will be consumed In this last stago of the voyage voy-age I CHAFFEi WILL WANT CAVALRY It Is doubtful whether G Chaffce would care to leave Taku without horses for the Sixth cavalry particularly particu-larly as according to all reports mounted cavalry lo needed for successful success-ful operations in the flat country lying between Tien Tin and Taku This fact alone may delay pperatlona until i r late In the present week though at I least a portion pf the international I column may start on the day fixed namely tomorrow JAPAN WORKING HARD Assurances received here show that the Japanese Government Is doing all In its power to facilitate the international interna-tional movement and though the goodwill good-will of the Japanese was never suspected sus-pected as far as the United States Is concerned the knowledge gratifying Secretary Long had a cable message today from the commander of the Buffalo at Hongkong stating that he has palled for Taku The Buffalo Buffa-lo Is taking out muchneeded relief men for the naval crews and also has I a lot of stores aboard for the approachIng approach-Ing campaign I |
