Show GLASMANNS WAIL Ho Thinks Ho Was Tricked Out of the Nomination The Ogden Standard of last night says editorially No man in Utah can take a political defeat with an easier grace than the Standard editor but such defeat must come from an honorable opponent We could have taken up the cause of MaJ F A Grantor Grant-or James Devlno with the spirit of having hav-ing been defeated by an honorable and open opponent But not so with George Sutherland A month ago George Sutherland Suth-erland assured the writer that under no conditions or considerations would he accept the nomination for Congress and If he were nominated he would decline de-cline Under such a personal pledge made to Mr Glasmann the latter gentleman gen-tleman entered the race Even as late as three days ago Mr Sutherland assured as-sured Mr Glasmann that ho could not with honor accept the nomination after having permitted other candidates to enter the race on the solemn pledge of honor that he would not take the nomination nomi-nation The trick through which Mr Sutherland Suther-land received the nomination does not relieve him of his pledge of honor Besides Be-sides that he was a party to the trick was proved by his closest and dearest friend Mr E B Crltchlow who read Mr Sutherlands letter of declination and said he know Mr Sutherland was In earnest that he did not want and would not have the nomination and yet when Mr Sutherland was nominated nomi-nated a few minutes later this same man Crltchlow arose In the convention conven-tion and said he had another message from George Sutherland one he had not read yet and that message said If George Sutherland Is nominated he will not decline Docs E B Critchlow think that cither statement or those of George Sutherland were honorable George Sutherland stayed out of the race and allowed Grant Dcvlnc and Glasmann to build their fences and when the friends of the candidates had lined up and the battle was nearIng Us end then George Sutherland comes in presumably as pacifier and harmonlzcr to save the party from strife but there was no strife between the three candidates can-didates Their relations were the most friendly possible for candidates for the same office In fact each had pledged themselves to support the other In case of defeat before a host of people Then what was the strife that Sutherland had to heal Simply the strife created in the mind of the Salt Lake Tribune combination which was ready to resort to anything to defeat Mr Glasmann who would have been nominated but for the political jobbery practiced and the Arthur Brown forces for some reason rea-son Joined the combination and made It possible to nominate Sutherland Even all this political Jobbery could have been overcome but for the traitors In the Weber county delegation Wo desire to make a grateful acknowledgment acknowledg-ment for the manly campaign made by William Allison for Superintendent of Schools He offered himself to be sacrificed sac-rificed at all times to secure votes for the Congressional candidate and Weber We-ber county actually traded twenty votes to Sanpete for Superintendent of Schools in return for twenty votes for Mr Glasmann The action of Mr Allison Alli-son and his friends Is In strong contrast con-trast wljth the sneaking conduct of the Breeden managers However wo were convinced from the beginning that Salt Lake City would not let a very pronounced Ogden man have the Congressional nomination nomina-tion and therefore we were prepared for defeat It Is probably the best thing that could have happened to Ogden and ourselves because now wo are determined deter-mined to look after our own best Interests In-terests which of course means every possible good within our power to bring about for Ogden |
