Show MINE INSPECTORS REPORT Bomer Thomass Statement of Mines Condition on January 1st Corner Thomas the State Coal Mine Inspector on January 3 1000 made to S Gov Wells the following report on the 5 condition oC the Winter Quarters mine Winter Quarters mine Is the property proper-ty of the PleasantValley Coal cornS corn-S pany and Is situated about sixteen miles up a canyon off the main line 011 branch of the Rio Grande Western I railway from Colon The mine Is under supervision of T G Parmeley and Is one of the oldest mines In the Stale of Utah and the largest producer producing In 1SOO 435107 short tons using 4100 kegs of 4 powder an increase of 121230 tons I employs G12 men Aerate number of days worked was 305 In 1899 The mine Is artificially ventilated with a Gulbnl exhaust fan running at the rate of fiftyfive revolutions per ijilnute producing 15000 feet of air per minute which is i distributed to all the working places In tho mine All coal fa hauled on main haulageways by a ThompsonHouston hoist S r The Improvements made at this mine during 1S99 arc Large side tracks S Inside of mine one new chute three 77x16 boilers powder line stockers for S sach boiler boilerhouse largo boardinghouse board-inghouse and one large bvinkhouse S My first official visit of inspection was on January 9th to 13th The mine S jvas working full time with good ventilation venti-lation On the 12th of January was our first experience with trouble with I the eighthour law The drivers cameo came-o t dl at6ed with going in and out I of tho mine on their own time They demanded 25 cents of advance per day I 1 or go in and out of the mine on the companys time They were out one S day They decided that they gain on the companys time and come out on S their own tme On this visit 1 foundS found-S lots of room in the man way malting it inconvenient for the men to go and SO come from their work I suggested to II Superintendent T G Parmeley that this be fixed at once which was doneI I immediately JIy second visit of Inspection was on March 1Jth to 17lh I found the mine working full time with tho usual number S num-ber of men with mine working two mel wrltng shifts On this visit I found a number num-ber of stoplngs on the main entry leaking which caused a scarcity of air In the working places I took the foreman fore-man and showed him this and he had it 1 repaired at once 5 140tt my third visit of inspection to this mine June 9th to 12th I examined the mine Inside and out I found itS it-S In good condition but not working full time I found plenty of prop and cap pieces placed near the working places Jn accordance with tho law The fan was running at the rate of a little less than fiftyfive revolutions producing 45000 cubic feet per minute The mine was drained properly iMth all workings and traveling places dry My fourth official visit of inspection > inspec-tion was July 12th to 14th On my visit I Inspected the mine In and out yic mine was working one shift and n6t full time The superintendent was S making Jots of repairs preparing for the fall trade I found the mine Ins In-s in a very fine condition S My fifth visit of inspection was July iSth to 30th On this visit I examined only i tho main traveling ways and n S few of the working places I found all the traveling ways In good condition I The mine working a little better than on previous visits On my sixth visit of Inspection October Oc-tober 17th and 18th I examined the S Jrilhe inside and out They were wOrking wOrk-ing two shifts with 375 men I found the mine In good condition with ampler ample-r and cap pieces near the working places All miners were getting all the work they could do and the company com-pany could not fill all their orders for the want of more miners The ventilation t venti-lation was fairly good considering the S S amount of powder used in the mine All shots arc fired In this mine by the miners at any time i My seventh official visit was Do Iccmbor 2nd to GUI and Cth On this visit I Inspected Winter Quarters No 1 No 2 and No4 All the miners were working full time and all the men they could get and all In good condition with good air and all drain ages were in good shape and all employees 5 5 em-ployees working eight hours The run of the mine No 1 on this date waa Wr3 y 2000 short tons |
