Show FOUR UNION MEN QUIT Ceased Work for Anderson Bros Yesterday WAS RESULT OF MW RULE Andersons First Refused Emphatically Emphatic-ally to Discharge Their NonTJnion Men and President Brittain of the Federated Trades Then Told the Union Men It Was All Off After Which They Laid Down Tools Firm Says Work Will Not Be Hampered Ham-pered Union Thinks Otherwise Three union stonecutters In the employ em-ploy of Anderson Bros at First South and Tenth East streets laid down their tools early yesterday morning in compliance com-pliance with the new rule l of the Building Build-ing Trades council prohibiting union mo from working on buildings where nonunion men are employed Thcso men who wcra the first to go out did so under the direction of James H Brittain president of the Federated Trades Mi Brittain reached the scene shortly short-ly after the men had begun work yesterday yes-terday morning and was met by J M Anderson who warned him to keep off the grounds Brittain replied that he would do so and then asked Anderson what Jie Intended doing respecting the discharge of his nonunion workmen Anderson replied with considerable warmth that he didnt propose to do anything and Britlaln then said to the stonemasons Well boys it Is i all off The men then promptly laid down their tools and told Mr Anderson that it was Impossible for them to work for him longer under the circumstances NONUNION MEN PUT ON One of the men however so Mr Anderson An-derson says asked him to leave their places open for them until noon in the hope that they might reach some agreement agree-ment with the union whereby they could conclude the ivork Mr Anderson Ander-son agreed to this but at 11 oclock the spokesman returned and said that It would be Impossible for them to resume re-sume This closed the negotiations and In the afternoon nonunion stonemasons stone-masons were put to work The only other man who quit during the day was an electricalwiring worker who went to dinner and did not return The entire en-tire force on the buildings Is now nonunion non-union I QUESTION OF WIRING AND PLUMBING While the loss of the union men who quit yesterday does not hamper the work being carried on by Anderson Bros at the present time members of the Building Trades council say that It will be different when It comes to alec trlcwlrlng and plumbing All the workmen In this line they say belong to the union and the rule which has ust gone Into effect will prevent them from doing any work whatever upon the buildings ns long as nonunion men are employed Mr Anderson says however how-ever that he does not anticipate any trouble In completing his buildings the wiring and plumbing included II I < j Bentley foreman for Anderson 3ros said to a reporter yesterday that he had been In the employ of the firm continuously for six years and that as he had been paid union wages for eight hours work per day he had no complaint com-plaint to offer and thought the union wns making a serious mistake President Brittain of the Federated Trades denies the statement of Mr An derson In yesterdays Tribune to the effect that he ban always paid union wages for eight hours work and declares de-clares that In many Instances he has not done so President Brlttnln also says that the men who quit work yesterday yes-terday have only worked for the firm a short time TWO OTHERS ORDERED TO QUIT Two union men who are working on a building near Sixth East on First South were also ordered to quit yesterday yes-terday by I reason of the refusal > of George Morrow the contractor to discharge dis-charge nonunion employees and while It was not known whether or not they did quit work members of the union said that they would at least not return to work today So far as reported yesterday these were the only placss where the forces were mixed and no trouble Is anticipated antici-pated for the present One peculiar fea ture of the situation Is that nonunion as well as union men seem satisfied with the rule although the nonunion men say It cannot be enforced for any great length of time At meetings of the clcctrlcwlrlng workmen and other organizations last evening President Brittain reported the actions taken during the day und the men all declared that they would stand by the rule Jite yesterday afternoon Anderson Bros reported that they had all the men needed and that a number had applied for work for whom no places could be found |
