| Show VIDE IF SI8ANGEB S Louis Baker Probably Took Cyanide of Potassium IS i 5 0 DIED SUDDENLY AT HOSPITAL Ho Vas Sick Only Twelve Minutes S A Stranger Here but Letters Found oil His Person Show That His Name Was Louis Baker of Traverse Mich and More Recently of Butte Mont Police Havo a Theory That Ho Was a Fugitive From Justice Money on His Person A death that Is shrouded In mystery occurred at the Holy Cross hospital yesterday afternoon A shabbily dressed stranger sank dying to the floor of the main corridor a few minutes 0 min-utes after walking Into the hospital and despite efforts to revive him expired ex-pired within a dozen minutes The death It Is I thought was by suicide and It Is believed the man swallowed cyanide of potassium one of the most deadly poisons known to science From letters found In his pockets his name was found to be Louis Baker late of Traverse City Mich and more recently of Butte What his motive for committing com-mitting suicide could have been Is unknown un-known aa he left nothing or said nolh Ing during his dying moments that would Indicate suicide He was not penniless as 100 In cash was found sowed In an old rag In his pocket Tho police arc Inclined believe time Baker was a fugitive from justice and It was noticed that his description tallied with that of an Italian laborer who shot and killed J Florio a fellowcountryman near Brigham City last Sunday AVhen Baker first walked Into the hospital hos-pital at 330 beloek yesterday afternoon after-noon he complained of having pains in his Ktomach and said that County Physician Phy-sician Mayo had examined him and directed him to the County Commissioners Commis-sioners with a view to having him sent to the county Infirmary He said however that he wished to occupy award a-ward at the hospital and asked permission per-mission to stay saying that he was penniless and extremely sick The sister superior noticed that he had none of the appearances of a sick man and upon feeling his pulse found It to be normal She kept Baker In the corridor cor-ridor while she went to the telephone to consult Dr Mayo as to the mans identity and when she returned he claimed to be in great pain An attendant at-tendant was directed to show Baker to a bed but the latter took several steps forward and sank in a heap lie way pjaced In bed and died shortly afterward after-ward Drs Bcatty Wltcher Mayo and Benedict who examined the body thought death had been caused by poisoning although they said natural causes may have been responsible Dr Mayo thought the death to bo such as cyanide of potassium would cause An autopsy will probably be held today at ODonneirs undertaking establishment where the body now Is The deceased was apparently an Italian about CS years of age |
