Mrs. Virginia Fitzgerald was named secretary and Leonard Cosco, recently re-cently appointed treasurer, was reelected without opposition. VIRGINIA FITZGERALD Wayne L. Carlson is new Salt Lake County Democratic chairman. chair-man. He was elected at the county organization convention Saturday Satur-day at The Terrace Ball Room. Mr. Carlson, a smelting company I foreman, replaces Stephen C. Smoot, who did not seek re- J election. i- Mr. Carlson defeated Warwick C. Lamoreaux, an attorney, for the chairmanship by a vote of 283 to 203. Mrs. Spilsbury was re-elected by a vote of 317 to 152 for Mrs. Hannah Crookston. Mrs. Fitzgerald won over Lyle B. Gunderson by a vote to 318 to 84. A total of approximately 500 votes were cast out of a possible j 552. ! In addition to naming county j central committee officers the convention adopted a motion seeing up a new county central committee and executive committee com-mittee and certifying delegates to the forthcoming state Democratic Demo-cratic convention. The convention's keynote address ad-dress was delivered by Allan T. Howe, national chairman of the Young Democrats of America. In his address Mr. Howe called for the defeat at the polls this November of Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, who he said has gained the name of "Utah's Mr. Negative." Nega-tive." Frank E. Moss and candidates can-didates for the Democratic senatorial sena-torial nomination Rep. David S. King and Calvin L. Rampton. In his talk Mr. Howe praised the Kennedy administration and cited the "against" votes cast by Sen. Bennett. "I am sick and tired of hearing Sen. Bennett say he is against the programs which will help the State of Utah. And I suggest that the people of Utah are sick and tired of Sen. Bennett in the Senate," Mr. Howe said. Among other candidates to speak were Joseph H. Weston, seeking the party's nomination for the U. S. Senate, who devoted his talk to a defense of the justice jus-tice of the peace court system as a symbol of "protection from tyranny and governmental power the courts of the people." Also speaking briefly were declared de-clared candidates State Senator Bruce S. Jenkins, candidate for the party's nomination in the Second Congressional District; William ,H. (Bill) Henderson, candidate for the nomination for attorney general; and C. W. (Buck) Brady, candidate for the four year county commission post. Retiring chairman Smoot presided pre-sided over the convention. |
