Show Army National Guard Seeking 10 Pilots The Utah Army National Guard needs ten new pilots immediately in six areas of the state, Major Gen. Maxwell E. Rich, Adjutant General, said this week. There are openings for two pilots in Logan, one in Ogden, three in the Salt Lake area, two in American Fork and one each in Provo and Cedar City. "This is not just ordinary duty. A man must be in exceptional physical condition and above average av-erage mentally to qualify. Waivers Waiv-ers are not accepted." A comprehensive 62 weeks flight training course is offered at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and Camp Wolters, Texas, which includes in-cludes fixed wing, rotary wing, and instrument training. Rated pilots from other services can transfer into the Utah National Guard without repeating training although they must take a tran- sition course. Applicants must be warrant officers or commissioned officers and must begin army aviator training before reaching their 30th birthday. Enlisted men can qualify for commissions through any of the three officer candidate school programs offered by the Utah National Guard. At least one year in the National Guard or a combination of six months in the Guard and six months or more on active duty with one of the Armed Forces is required. Graduates Grad-uates must accept their commissions commis-sions before attaining 28 years of age. Pilots are assigned to artillery, engineer or transportation units and must be branch qualified for retention and promotion, in addition ad-dition to maintaining flying proficiency. pro-ficiency. Utah Guardsmen fly six place L 20 aircraft, two place L-l,9's, and three place H-23 helicopters, which are based at the National Guard Army Aviation Headquar- ters, Salt Lake Airport. The training program calls for a monthly week end drill beginning begin-ning Saturday noon, ending Sunday Sun-day evening for both ground schools and flying. In addition, pilots must fly during their spare time as necessary to meet minimum mini-mum night, instrument, crosscountry cross-country and regular flying requirements. re-quirements. "Our aircraft are maintained at Salt Lake Airport to provide better maintenance and supervision super-vision of flight training. However, How-ever, aircraft are used by commanders com-manders in the state whenever needed," said Gen. Rich. Prospective pilots interested in this program should contact the Utah National Guard unit nearest their home for complete information. It is now and in this world that we must live. Gide. |
