Show Gordon P Owen Jr. Appointed I Nat'L Newspaper Week Head ft' r I annual observance, is scheduled for October 15-21. Selection of the 1961 theme will be made at a meeting February 20 in Denver of the executive committee. Since its beginning in 1939, the annual observance of NNW has grown to include promotion by virtually every group connected con-nected with the newspaper industry. in-dustry. Recently even radio and television have given time in promoting the week. Promotions are designed to focus public attention at-tention on the newspapers of America. Gordon P. Owen, Jr. manages the Utah State Press Assn., with headquarters in Salt Lake City. The association is the trade association asso-ciation for 50 weekly papers in Utah, handling regional and national advertising for papers. Last year's billings were . just under $300,000. In addition, Mr. Owen represents the legislature and arranges conventions semiannually. semi-annually. He took his present position in 1955. and holds a degree in journalism and advertising adver-tising from the University of Utah. He attended BYU for two years and was then called on a mission for the LDS Church for two years in South Africa. He resumed his studies in 1952 and graduated from the University of Utah in 1955. Mr. Owen is active in newspaper news-paper and advertising groups on a national and regional level. He is a member of Newspaper Assn. Managers, Advertising Assn. of the West, Sigma Delta Chi, Salt Lake Advertising Club, Utah Assn. of Sales Executives, Utah Committee on Industrial and Employment Planning, Traffic Education Committee on Industrial Indus-trial and Employment Planning, Traffic Education Committee of the Utah Safety Council, Ambassador Am-bassador Athletic Club, Business Men's Alliance, Salt Lake Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce, and Editor of the Utah Publisher and Printer. GORDON P. OWEN, JR. Gordon P. Owen Jr., manager of the Utah State Press Assn., has been named chairman of the 1961 National Newspaper Week Committee. Appointment was announced by C. B. LaFromboise, president of the Newspaper Association Managers, Inc., originators and annual sponsors of National Newspaper Week. LaFromboise is general manager of the Washington Wash-ington Newspaper Publishers Assn. Mr. Owen and Mr. LaFromboise LaFrom-boise have announced the following fol-lowing appointments to the 1961 NNW executive committee: Stanford Smith, general manager, man-ager, American Newspaper Publishers Pub-lishers Assn.
