Show Utah's Per Capita Income Rates Among Lowest in the Nation Utahns' per capita personal income in 1960 was $1,936 compared com-pared with a national average of $2,242, according to an analysis analy-sis of U. S. Department of Commerce Com-merce figures released by the Utah Foundation, the private research re-search organization. This was an increase for Utah of $82 (or 4.2 per cent) over per capita personal income of 1959. and an increase nationwide of $83 (or 3.84 per cent). Utah's per capita personal income in-come of $1,936 (total personal income divided by the population) popula-tion) was $131 below the mountain moun-tain states average of $2,067 and $569 below the western states' average of $2,505. Utah ranked 32nd among the 50 states, but of the 18 states with lower per capita income, 12 were in the south. "Although per capita income in Utah is below the U.S. average the economy of the state during recent years hras been growing at a faster rate than that of the nation as a whole," the report pointed out. One reason is that Utah's figures are lower than those for the nation so a similar dollar increase means a greater percentage increase for the Beehive Bee-hive State. Total personal income in Utah last year was $1,753,000,000, an increase of 6.70 per cent over 1959. U. S. total personal income increased 5.5 per cent during 1960. Between 1955 and 1960, total personal income for Utahns rose 40 per cent, compared with a national na-tional increase of 31 per cent. During that five year period per capita income increased 24 per cent for Utah, compared with only a 20 per cent increase in the nation. On the basis of U. S. figures of 3.62 persons per household in Utah, the average income per household in 1960 was $7,008. For the United States, which averages 3.29 persons per house hold, the income was $7,376 per household or $368 more than in Utah. |
