S Ambassador to Can Can- ada It is a simple little house of white marble land only cost half a million dollars There other wealthy are arc several everal s homes in this section of the is is- is land Our next stop was vas at the Blow Hale Lo explain the blow Hale is a Lava rock for for- formation formation mation nation Jon bit Il the beach Through years ears of time the ocean beating upon the thc rocks has cut a sub- sub channel under the rock There at quite a distance from the waters w edge this cay cay- cavern cavern ern has an opening The waves waye fill this cavern with water tin un- tinder tinder der pressure forcing air air and water out in a to water spout spout- When Then we arrived there it ap ape appeared ap- ap appeared that the tide was vas too low to fill the cavern with wa wa- water water wa- wa water ter so we all went down to have a close look at it The of of- officer officer officer in charge was was was' wass was's standing s just over the hole when several of the fellows when an extra large wave filled the cavern and water out but through the hole completely soaking the officer and several of the men Our next stop was at the Mormon l temple This is a beau beau- beautiful beautiful beautiful building and the grounds are tare well kept 1 I didn't get to look around a great deal because we didn't stay but a few minutes and I spent most of ray my m time talking with the elders who were in charge of the the information booth This visit alone was worth the whole price of the th e tour We Ve stopped topped for lunch at a little grove near the sea then the n went on further lurther until we arri v ed d at the opposite side of the he island Here we wo nil all went vent swim swim- swimming swimming SWIm SWIm- SWImming ming for about 40 1 minutes Our next stop was to inspect a pine pine- pineapple p pineapple apple field I found that pine pine- pineapples pl pineaPPles C- C Capples apples are not grown too easily Before they thc are arc planted the soil is covered with roofing paper and the tiny shoots are stuck down through the roof roof- roofing roofing roofing ing paper into the soil The paper keeps in the thc moisture and prevents weeds from growing It must take an enormous amount of paper for the fields are Jarge covering mile upon mile of land After the plants are set in tho the ground it is about 18 months before the pineapple is ready to harvest Just one fruit to one plant Sugar cane seems to t be the main crop however This grows in a thick mass like tall thick reeds When iti is ready read to harvest har har- harvest harvest vest they set fire to the thc cane burning off all of the dry try leav loav- leaves loaves es which contain no sugar The cane is then cut and loaded on on- onto onto onto to small railroad cars which run rim right through the he fields fields' f on moveable movable tracks You see they bring the train to the cane not the cane to the train Of course the train is somewhat of a mid mid- midget midget midget get compared to the trains back home For that matter matt r. r all the trains here Iere are midgets The Tile biggest bigg st engine in the is island is- is island island land looks Ike a big brother to the engine that pulls the mini- mini ture train at Como Getting back closer to the north side of the island from where we started we drove droye through fort Scofield It was much more like a city than an army fort though hough But then itis it itis itis is the largest army arm post in the U. U S. S S army and some say the largest lar est port in the world From here back to 10 Pearl Harbor and the ship at about abou 4 30 in the afternoon So far I Have only told you I of the places where we stopped Now to tell lell of what we saw while traveling The island is not at all flat In fact it seems just like a mountain rising up out of the sea Right around the cost line the thus ground is level more or less Toward the center e of the island the mountains rise They are steep and covered with vegetation tion tion- The tops of the mountains are always alwa s covered with within clouds The climate is wonderful Not hot and no Imo There is al always always al- al always ways a wind blowing Not a n string wind but a n steady one One thing timing b that impressed me m e ewas was their roads They Ther care are oil oil- oiled oiled oiled ed or cement roads Grass grows right up to the very edge of the paving material so that there is no dust to blow Even more than that they keep the grass trimmed Along the road roadside roadside roadside side are bushes about the size of large rose bushes These have big flowers on them that run r n from a light pink to a deep red in color Then the ocean is of many man colors The blue of the deep water 1 tel the green of the water and the time gray of the water ater over the sand and huge brokers flecked with white rolling in 11 combine to tomake tomake tomake make a very cry pretty pattern of color and motion There are tall slender coconut palms reaching up into the blue sky standing like sentinels above the other trees and bushes Al Al- Altogether Altogether Altogether together it is a n very beautiful place and I will look forward to another visit here in years realS to come for not even man will be able to change the time steep mountain slopes with their green carpet and rocky ledges The Tho ocean will wall not yield her beauty before the advantage of civilized man manI J.
