Show Utah State Fair Announces Award Competition Plans for the 1959 Utah State Fair Music Contests are now complete. Dates for the contest are Sept. 15 and 16 and will be held at the Fairgrounds. The contest is held in five categories. The categories are: voice, piano, wind instrument, and composition. composi-tion. In each of these categories there are two divisions except in the category of composition. The medium classification includes in-cludes all ages up to 17 years of age. The advanced classification includes in-cludes contestants from 16 years of age to 23 years. There is no age limit placed on contestants in composition but it is understood under-stood that established professionals profes-sionals will not compete. The judges for the contest are as follows: Robert Ward of New York City, well known composer, compo-ser, teacher and editor of Galaxy Music Corporation judge of musical compositions. The performance judges are as follows: Norma Lee Madsen, violinist, member of the Utah Symphony Orchestra; Robert Cundick, asst. professor of music, BYU, pianist, organist and composer; Jay L. Welch, assistant director of the Tabernacle Choir, composer, instructor in-structor of music and administrative adminis-trative assistant in the music department de-partment of the University of Utah. These three judges will sit as a jury of three in all the performance per-formance competition. They will arrive at their judgments independently inde-pendently and their decisions will be moderated by the supervisor super-visor of the contests. The Awards are as follows: In the medium classification there is an award of $15 for first prize and $10 for second prize offered by the Fair Board. In the advanced ad-vanced classification the Fair offers $25 for first and $20 for second place. These awards apply ap-ply to each of the four performing perform-ing categories.
