Show U Professor Seeks Students Opinions What do high school students think about university sponsored summer workshops designed to give them advanced training in science and math? The National Science Foundation Founda-tion is trying to find out. A University of Utah professor traveled to Humboldt University in Areata, Calif., Monday to ask students in a summer course there how they feel about it. Dr. Calvin W. Taylor. U. psychology psy-chology professor, and seven other professors from universities universi-ties in the country have visited many of the 105 summer sessions ses-sions held in cooperation with the National Science Foundation. Founda-tion. They ask the high school students stu-dents such questions as how they found out about the course, why they were interested, what they think of those teaching it and what effect it will have on their future high school and college work. One puzzle, according to Dr. Taylor, is why not a single Utah student applied for a recent four week session at Montana state College in Bozeman, although every high school principal in Utah received notification of it. After their visits are complete, the evaluation will meet in Chicago Chi-cago for a final round up session before reporting their findings to NSF. Purpose of the summer courses according to the Foundation, is to provide superior high school students with educational experiences ex-periences in the sciences and math beyond those normally available in high school. |
