Show Utah Labor Charts Big Outing For 1959 Labor Day Display and demonstration booths, a fine boxing card, stock rar races, a band concert and a beef barbecue will be served up to the thousands of Utahns who turn out Sept. 7 at the Utah State Fairgrounds to greet George L. Meany, AFL-CIO national president. presi-dent. Details of the Labor Day celebration, cele-bration, which shapes up as the biggest in the history of Utah labor, were announced by LaMar D. Gulbransen, Utah State AFL-CIO AFL-CIO President. Mr. Meany, who will be making mak-ing his first formal appearance in the intermountain region, is to make an address to the nation from the Fairgrounds grandstand. grand-stand. Utah labor will take the same occasion to honor Gene Fullmer. Mr. Meany will present the former for-mer middleweight champion with a special gift from national labor honoring him as the "outstanding "out-standing trade unionist , in our American athletics." Earlier in the day, Fullmer will box an exhibition on the Fairgrounds midway. It will be his first ring appearance after his championship bout with Carmen Car-men Basilio. The State AFL-CIO expects at least 20,000 and possibly 30,000 members and friends for the festivities fes-tivities which will get underway at 2 p.m. "There will be a lunch of barbecued bar-becued beef for all," the state president said, "and we will begin be-gin serving from the Coliseum at 2 o'clock." Admission to the festivities is 1 $1. The Fullmer exhibition will cap a 90 minute boxing card, which will be followed by stock car races at the grandstand. The fights will begin at 3:30 p.m. ' At least a dozen prominent Utah unions will have booths in I the fairgrounds. They will present pre-sent displays and demonstrations which characterize some of the modern features of their work. Festivities will also include an hour-long concert by Strongs Military Band, which will feature fea-ture accomplished union musicians musi-cians of the state. |
