Show A Fine Year For Democrats Utah now is launched on what promises to be one of its most lively political years. A United States Senator, Arthur V. Watkins, self styled confident of the president, is up for re-election. And two lesser Republicans, William A. Dawson and Henry Aldous Nixon, representatives in Congress from the First and Second districts, likewise will have to face voters in November. Of all recent years, 1958 seems to offer Democrats the best opportunity of victory in all three races. In addition to the national scene, most of the Utah legislature legis-lature also will be elected in 1958. (Continued on Page 4) A Fine Fear For Democrats (Continued from Page 1) Then there is the reorganization within the political parties as provided by Utah law. The reorganization process starts with the mass meetings each party is to hold soon in election districts throughout the city and county. One of the principal purposes of the mass meetings meet-ings is to elect delegates to the political conventions. Republican leaders, at least on the national level, have issued statements claiming that recent Russian feats in science will have no effect on election returns. They want people to forget that these Russian advances and our corresponding lack of advances were made during some six years of Republican government. Democrats, of course, will not let the people forget where the blame lies. They will remind voters that we no longer are living in the days of the B-29 and the blockbuster bomb, no matter how fond the memories of our Republican president. And voters, who often are several steps ahead of the politicians poli-ticians anyway, will know who got us into the current mess. Yes, it looks like a wonderful year for Democrats all down the line. 0O0 I |
