Show Democratic Political Activity Centers on Chairman Choke j Political activity picked up in Democratic quarters this week with several new names mentioned men-tioned for state chairman and backers of one of the principal candidates for the Senate nomination nomi-nation taking large newspaper ads to urge their favorite to run. A number of backers of Salt Lake County Attorney Frank E. Moss for the Democratic nomination nomi-nation for U. S. Senator bought space in daily newspapers to urge Mr. Moss' candidacy. The name of Warwick C. Lam-oreaux, Lam-oreaux, Salt Lake City attorney, was suggested as a possible candidate can-didate for State Democratic Chairman. Two candidates already al-ready are in the field, Laurel J. Brown, Salt Lake County mink farmer, and Joseph H. Weston, Utah writer. Milton L. Weilen-mann, Weilen-mann, present chairman, has announced an-nounced he would not seek reelection. re-election. Observers were expecting announcements an-nouncements of intentions soon. They pointed out that the "crucial" "cru-cial" time for making public announcements is drawing near. Thus far activity on behalf of various real or imagined candidates candi-dates has been of a behind the scenes nature. Trial balloons aplenty have been sent aloft to test the political atmosphere. Some have sent back favorable reports, others have been less optimistic. Apparently the feelers put out by backers of Mr. Moss have been most encouraging and he is expected to make a public announcement an-nouncement shortly. Others whose names still are mentioned for the Senate nomination nomi-nation include Mr. Weilenmann; Robert H. Hinckley, a vice-president of American Broadcasting-Paramount Broadcasting-Paramount Theatres, Inc., who also maintains business interests in Utah former governor Herbert Her-bert B. Maw; Obert C. Tanner, Salt Lake businessman and a professor of philosophy at the University of Utah. House of Representatives. Names of Allan C. Howe, a Salt Lake attorney, and Oscar Mc-Conkie Mc-Conkie Jr., the candidate in 1956, are still being mentioned. Mr. Howe, along with Deputy Salt Lake County Attorney Jay Banks is also being mentioned as a possible candidate for state chairman. It was reported during the week that Tracy Welling, long active in Utah Democratic cir- cles, was being given favorable consideration for the chairman post. The same sources said Mrs. Sunday Anderson, former state representative and active in many branches of the party, may be the next vice chairman. Other candidates being mentioned men-tioned include Ray Leavitt for the Democratic nomination for the four-year county commission term, and Lawrence Jones for county assessor. Republicans with their incumbents incum-bents all expected to seek reelection, re-election, are not looking forward to much activity prior to the general election. Seeking reelection will be Sen. Arthur V. Watkins, Rep. William A. Dawson and Rep. Henry A. Dixon. In addition to the national offices of-fices a number of county offices will be filled and virtually the entire Utah legislature will be elected. |
