Show Democratic Advisory Council Rakes GOP Record on Labor resist such efforts to take retribution retri-bution on the whole labor movement move-ment because of the sins of a few. "Ill considered, punitive legislation legis-lation will tend to destroy the great social contributions of our American labor. Labor's great and successful wars against poverty, pov-erty, against communism, and fascism, against community indifference in-difference to the needs of the underprivileged, will suffer if America's unions must constantly constant-ly take the defensive against punitive laws. The country and each industrial community will be the poorer if the splendid educational ed-ucational and community service activities of the labor movement are jeopardized by hostile legislation." The Democratic National Advisory Ad-visory Committee this week took note of the rising attacks on the labor movement. In a statement, the advisory committee pointed out: "Although they opposed virtually vir-tually all of the labor and social bills of recent years, the Republican Repub-lican Party today seeks to give the impression that it was responsible re-sponsible for the passage of the laws. But propaganda can not change the facts of .history. "Beginning with the 80th Congress Con-gress and the enactment over types of abuses which can be adequately ade-quately dealt with through government gov-ernment action. "Properly drafted legislation aimed at eliminating improper practices by both labor and management man-agement is deserving of support by the American people. But proposals which claim to deal with such improper activities but are actually .intended only to undermine effective collective bargaining, or weakening or destroying honest decent unions should be resisted. "The Democratic Party will President Truman s veto of the iniquitous Taft-Hartley Act, the Republicans have by legislation and by administrative action or inaction, sought to weaken many of these constructive measures for the common good. "Today the labor movement in America is once again under attack at-tack from its enemies. We of . the Democratic party reject with vigor and concern these attacks on the great American labor movement by leading figures in the Republican Party and- by their associates in the ranks of big business. "We are shocked by the intemperate in-temperate nature of these Republican Re-publican big business attacks on labor. We are appalled by the fact that the Republican Party has remained silent without protest pro-test and without correction of the record, when a Republican Senator from Arizona seeks to smear the leader of a clean, democratic trade union by describing de-scribing him as more dangerous to America than the Russian communists. "It is clear from the record that statements such as this can only poison the atmosphere of the American community, causing caus-ing confusion in our midst and concern among our friends in other nations. "It is clear that the Republican Party is seeking to take advantage advan-tage of the recession and of the revaluation of corruption by a few officials of a few labor unions to punish and repress all trade unions and their millions of members. "Thus, the Republican Party professes its "friendship" for labor at the same time that its leader in the U. S. Senate, Sen. Knowland of California, is campaigning cam-paigning in the state of California Califor-nia in support of an anti-union "right to work" law. It is the Republican Re-publican party, allied with representatives rep-resentatives of big business, that is conducting an extraordinary and continuous attack on labor's fundamental rights. "The Democratic Party recognizes recog-nizes that corruption, whether in the ranks of labor, in business or in government, cannot be condoned. con-doned. "We hail the efforts of the AFL-CIO to establish its high standards for the conduct of labor officials and to set forth equally high standards for democratic demo-cratic rights for rank and file trade union members. These efforts, ef-forts, embodied in the AFL-CIO Codes of Ethical Practices, mark a high level of labor statesmanship. statesman-ship. , "In addition, the efforts of the trade union movement to expel from its midst those who have failed to meet their responsibility responsi-bility and trust deserve the com-mendationo com-mendationo f every American. "We applaud the constructive and cooperative attitude of the AFL-CIO toward the enactment of well-considered legislation aimed at dealing with specific |
